Governor Leads Westridge Walks Finale

Westridge Walks Finale

Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds are welcomed by Westridge Assistant Principal Janelle Green and Principal Mary Jane Stites.

Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds joined staff and students at Westridge Elementary to walk the final steps in Westridge Walks. In response to the Governor’s Start Somewhere Walk in September, the students and staff set a goal to walk 1 million football fields, which they completed alongside their special guests.

Sixth grade Extended Learning students set the 1 million football field goal for the school and calculated how far each student and staff member would need to walk to reach the goal. Wellmark generously donated pedometers, and the ELP students created a spreadsheet to keep track of the steps. After learning how to convert steps into miles, they created a 12×8 foot map, which they used to chart the school’s progress.

To date, they have circled the Earth 2.5 times, walked more than 58,000 miles and 820 million steps. Along the way, the school was recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama at the Let’s Move event at Wells Fargo Arena and has been featured on the Healthiest State Initiative website.
