WDMCS School Board Election Results

School Board Members directly impact students’ lives. Board Member Jill Hansen visits with WDMCS students. (She was not up for election this year.)

School Board elections were held Sept. 13 throughout the state of Iowa.

In the WDMCS, four seats were open and nine candidates campaigned for election. Unofficial election returns show David J. Brown, Kevin Carroll, Andi Lipman and incumbent Milton Cole as the winners of the election.

The new board members will be sworn in at the next meeting on Monday, Sept. 19. The following is brief biographical information on these individuals. (This information was originally compiled by the Des Moines Register.)

David J. Brown
AGE: 51
ADDRESS: 5870 Highland Circle, West Des Moines
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in German, Lawrence University, Appleton, Wis.; law degree, University of Iowa College of Law
OCCUPATION: Vice president of compliance, Principal Financial Group
FAMILY: Married to Julie, with three children including a 2010 Valley grad and students at Valley and Westridge Elementary School
COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE: Served on Board of Directors of Youth Emergency Services & Shelter for eight years, including three years as president; served on board of directors of Hospice of Central Iowa for six years; graduate of Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute

Kevin Carroll
AGE 37
ADDRESS: 313 31st St., West Des Moines
OCCUPATION: Manager of mental health and social services at Broadlawns Medical Center
EDUCATION: Doctorate in Educational Leadership, Drake University; Master of Education, University of Maryland; Master of Marriage and Family Therapy, University of New Hampshire; bachelor’s degree in philosophy, Central College
FAMILY: Married to Julie, a teacher at Valley Southwoods Freshman High School, with two children attending Fairmeadows Elementary School and Stilwell Junior High School
COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE: Served on the district’s boundary, start/end, staff recognition and Building a Learning Community committees

H. Milton Cole
AGE: 67
ADDRESS: 2001 S. 40th Court, West Des Moines
OCCUPATION: Retired minister serving as a part-time assisting priest at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in West Des Moines
EDUCATION: Undergraduate studies at College of William and Mary and Virginia Commonwealth University; graduate degrees in early childhood and elementary education, University of the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C.; Master of Divinity, General Theological Seminary, New York
FAMILY: Married to Mary, with three children including a 2011 Valley graduate and students at Stilwell Junior High School and Hillside Elementary School
COMMUNITY SERVICE: Current member of West Des Moines school board; outreach ministry at St. Timothy’s; school volunteer; past member of Iowa Commission of People with Disabilities

Andi Lipman
AGE: 48
ADDRESS: 316 46th Place, West Des Moines
EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science, University of Iowa; law degree, University of Iowa College of Law
FAMILY: Married to Jeff, with four children. One graduated from Valley in 2010, the others attend Valley Southwoods, Stilwell and Western Hills Elementary School
COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE: Western Hills Elementary School PTA co-vice president, Southwoods High School PTO volunteer coordinator, Western Hills representative for the district’s School Community Network; school volunteer; past service on district boundary committee

The WDMCS Board of Education serves as the legislative governing body of the school district. The primary functions of the board can be described as policy-making, appraisal and evaluation.
