1. Hy-Vee Foundation Scholarship
All high school seniors working for Hy-Vee and/or subsidiary who began their employment on or before September 15, 2009 are eligible to apply. High school senior sons and daughters of full, regular, and part-time Hy-Vee and subsidiary associates who have a minimum of six months employment with the company as of September 15, 2009 may also apply. Applicants must be enrolling in college for the first time. Up to 40 -- $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to 2009-10 high school seniors. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. 3. Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship
Eligibility for application is limited to men and women entering their senior year of high school in the 2009-2010 academic year who have at least a 3.0 grade average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport. The link to the online application is available at www.wendysheisman.com Any eligible student can register and begin the application process. The online application must be completed by the student no later than 5:00 pm, central time, on October 1, 2009. Each applicant must have their online application reviewed and confirmed online by a school representative.
4. 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
This program specifically celebrates the spirit of volunteerism and recognizes those students who have particularly distinguished themselves through volunteer work. Applications can be filled out online at: http://spirit.prudential.com or www.prudential.com/spirit (access key: spirit). Once you have completed your online application, print it out, sign it, and have a parent sign it. Submit your printed and signed application to Mrs. Newkirk in the Guidance Office by Monday, November 2, 2009.
5. Coca Cola Scholarship
This scholarship is for well-rounded students with highly developed interests in their community. Applications must be submitted online at: www.coca-colascholars.org. Scholarships vary in amounts from $10,000 - $20,000. Application Deadline

6. 2010 Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarships
Any senior child or grandchild of a living Elk or a charter member of a Lodge is eligible to apply. Scholarship, leadership, and financial need are considered for this scholarship. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or can be downloaded from the elks website at www.elks.org/enf/scholars. Applications must be postmarked no later than November 2, 2009.
7. Dr. Seuss’s Oh the Places You’ll Go! 2010 College Scholarship
This scholarship is open to seniors who will submit an original literary composition that shows what kinds of opportunities and challenges you think your education will present in the future. All entries must be original works submitted in personal essay/memoir format. The essay can be no longer than 500 words. Entries must be postmarked by February 15, 2010. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or visit www.ohtheplaces.org to print out an application.
8. AXA Achievement Scholarship
The AXA Achievement Scholarship offers college scholarships in varying amounts to high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school, the community or the workplace. Applicants must plan on enrolling full-time in an accredited two or four year college or university in the United States in the fall of 2010. Applications must be postmarked by December 15, 2009. 9. Iowa Newspaper Foundation Scholarship Program
These scholarships (varied amounts) are for students preparing for a newspaper industry. Two letters or recommendation and two samples of your writing are required. Applications must be postmarked by February 12, 2010. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or may be downloaded at www.inanews.com/inf/scholarships/php.
10. Grand Lodge of Iowa Masonic Scholarships
The principle criterion is service to school and community with special emphasis upon leadership roles in these areas. An applicant’s academic record, communication skills, and need for financial assistance are also carefully considered. Finalists will be asked to appear for a personal interview. Applications must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2010.
11. Grand Lodge of Iowa MCEC Technical Scholarships
These $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to a number of graduating Iowa high school seniors that plan to enroll in a mechanical or trade course of study at an accredited Iowa Community College. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2010.
12. Bruegger’s Enterprises, Inc. Scholarship
Bruegger’s Bagel Bakeries will be awarding three (3) $5,000 scholarships to three deserving Bakery Team Members. Team Members must be employed with the company as of August 1, 2009 to be eligible to apply by January 1, 2010. Scholarships will be awarded by April 15, 2010. The three Team Members awarded the scholarship must remain employed with Bruegger’s through August 2010 and work a minimum of 500 hours in the 9 months preceding the start of college. 13. Better Business Bureau Student of Integrity Scholarship
The Des Moines Better business Bureau is sponsoring this scholarship to honor students of integrity. Winners will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship to the accredited college/university of his/her choice. Criteria for the award include leadership, community service, academics, integrity essay and letters of recommendation. Only one application per school can be accepted. All applications must be in to Mrs. Newkirk in the Counseling Office by Monday, December 11, 2009 (this gives the school time to choose their applicant and meet the postmark date of Dec. 18).
14. Iowa Credit Union Foundation – Family Involvement Board Scholarship
This scholarship is open to any high school senior who will graduate in 2009 and who will be entering an accredited undergraduate, graduate or vocational program. All applicants must have an account established in their own name and be a “member in good standing” at a credit union that is a member of the Iowa Credit Union League. Scholarship amounts vary from $500 to $1,500. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or can be completed on-line at www.iowacreditunions.com. All entries are due by February 5, 2010.
15. Christina Hixson Opportunity Awards – Iowa State University
This scholarship is now a half-tuition scholarship (estimated value of more that $13,000 over eight semesters) and is offered to a student from each of Iowa’s 99 counties. Students must have faced challenges of personal and/or financial hardship, be a resident of Iowa, possess potential to succeed, demonstrate financial eligibility and plan on attending Iowa State University. Applicants must complete the online application (www.dso.iastate.edu/hixson/application) by February 1, 2010. You must also complete the Iowa State admission process by February 1, 2010 and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1, 2010.
16. The Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship
Each recipient of this scholarship must be of the Protestant faith, a resident of the State of Iowa, and a full-time student at the University of Iowa. There will be 75 - 85 scholarships awarded in the amount of $400 each. All recipients must be of good character and have a good scholastic record. Applications must be submitted no later than May 1, 2010.
17. University of Iowa – Presidential Scholarship Program
To be eligible for this program, students must:
- Have a 3.8 cumulative grade point average
- Have an ACT composite score of 30 or better
Old Gold Scholarships of $3,000 a year for up to four years will recognize up to 350 of the most outstanding candidates in the Presidential Scholarship competition.
Presidential Scholarships are worth $40,000 ($10,000 for four years) and will be awarded to 20 Old Gold Scholars. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. They can also be downloaded at www.uiowa.edu/admissions/undergrad/scholarships/first-year. Completed applications must be postmarked by December 11, 2009. Transcripts must accompany the application!
18. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program
The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding, low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline they choose. Applicants must be a U. S. citizen or have national or legal permanent residency in the U. S., have attained a GPA of 3.3 and be enrolling full time at an accredited college or university. Paper applications must be postmarked by January 11, 2010 and online applications must be submitted by January 11, 2010. Online applications are preferred and can be found at www.gmsp.org.
19. KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program
To qualify for this scholarship a student must be graduating from high school this academic year (2009-2010), maintain a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, enroll in a public, in-state college or university, pursue a bachelor’s degree and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Applications are to be completed online at www.kfcsholars.org. Online applications will be available from December 1, 2009 through February 10, 2010.
20. U. S. Bank Internet Scholarship Program
U. S. Bank will award up to thirty $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors planning to attend accredited two- or four-year colleges full-time next fall. Scholarship award recipients are selected through a random drawing process. Students can apply online by visiting the U. S. Bank web site at www.usbank.com/studentloans. Online applications will be accepted from October, 2009 through March 2010.
21. H.S. Ostlin Memorial Scholarship – Iowa State University
Selection is based on academic excellence, preference is given to students intending to pursue a career in engineering. Applicants must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to March 1, 2009. The amount of the award if $1,000 and is renewable for three additional years provided the student fulfills the scholarship requirements. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or can be download at www.financialaid.iastate.edu. The application deadline is March 1, 2010.
22. Mandelbaum Family Scholarship – Iowa State University
These scholarships will be awarded to students from the Des Moines area attending Iowa State University. Preference is given to those students enrolled in the majors of Political Science, Economics, and International Relations. Selection is also based on academic achievement and financial need. To apply you must file a Free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to March 1, 2010 and be offered admission to Iowa State University. No separate scholarship application is necessary.
23. Mediacom World Class Scholarship
These scholarships will be awarded to students from the Des Moines area attending Iowa State University. Preference is given to those students enrolled in the majors of Political Science, Economics, and International Relations. Selection is also based on academic achievement and financial need. 24. Iowa PTA – H.L. Taylor Scholarship
Mediacom will award up to 50 scholarships of $1,000 each to graduating high school students attending any accredited two-year or four-year college, university, technical or vocational school in the fall of 2010. All completed applications must include an essay on leadership,
the applicant’s school transcript, and two letters of recommendation. The deadline for applications is February 10, 2010. Applications are available in the guidance Office or

25. Des Moines Women’s Club $1,000 Scholarships
To be eligible for consideration, an individual must be a graduating senior of an Iowa Public high school and be considered a resident of the state of Iowa for one year prior to graduation. The scholarship must be used for full-time study at an accredited Iowa college, university or vocational school. References and a completed application must be postmarked by February 1, 2010.
26. Prairie Meadows Scholarship
Applicants must be graduating from a Polk County high school with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and show participation in community and school activities. Students must be a United States citizen or permanent resident for at least two consecutive years. Applicants must be planning on attending any accredited college in the state of Iowa. Each high school will select two (2) $2,500 winners. Applications are due in the Counseling Office to Mrs. Newkirk by April 2, 2010
27. Cargill Community Scholarship
This program awards $1,000 scholarships to 350 high-school seniors in the United States who live in communities where Cargill has a business presence (3030 E. Granger Ave., Des Moines). While it is administered by the National FFA Organization, students do not have to be in FFA to apply. Students are selected based on academic achievement and leadership in extracurricular and civic activities. A signature from a Cargill employee is required in order to be eligible for the program. 28. United States JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to graduating high school seniors who plan to continue their education at accredited post-secondary colleges, universities or vocational schools. References and personal statement are required. Application must be postmarked by January 6, 2010. Scholarship applications are available in the Guidance Office
29. Keep Iowa Beautiful – Robert E. Byers Scholarship
Students entering an Iowa college or university to major in community enhancement or environmental areas of study are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Four $500 scholarships will be awarded. Applications must be done online at www.keepiowabeautiful.com and are due by February 1, 2010.
30. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC)National Scholarship
This program offers scholarships to students from communities who face limited access to educational and career opportunities. Eligible students must submit a complete application, transcript, personal statement, a letter of recommendation, and a copy of the IRS Form W2 filed by parents/guardians to document total income. Minority students are encouraged to apply but scholarships are available to all students. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or online at www.rmhc.org The Application deadline is February 16, 2010. Please note that there are separate applications for Asian Students, African American students, and Hispanic students. Please make sure you pick up the correct application!
31. First Friday Breakfast Club Scholarship
Applicants must be a resident of the state of Iowa and preferably attending college in Iowa. Applicants must be able to demonstrate activities that helped reduce homophobia in his/her school and/or community in order to qualify for this $2,500 scholarship. Primary consideration is given to activities that reduce homophobia. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or on line at www.ffbciowa.org Applications must be received by March 31, 2010.
32. James W. Smith Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is available to all graduating seniors who will be seeking to further their education. Applicants must have a 2.5 or greater GPA, be accepted to a four year college or university, be of good character, have leadership qualities, and provide financial need. The application deadline is March 31, 2010.
33. VEISHEA Leadership Scholarship
Applicants must be planning on attending Iowa State University, rank in the upper 15% of their high school class and have an ACT composite of at least 26 (or an SAT score of 1800), and exhibit involvement in high school and community activities, particularly in leadership positions. Applications can be found in the Guidance Office or online at www.veishea.iastate.edu. Applications must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2010.
34. VEISHEA Community Involvement Scholarship
Applicants must have been accepted to Iowa State and plan to attend in the Fall of 2009, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and exhibit dedication towards volunteering in their community and show potential for continued community involvement. Applications can be found in the Guidance Office or online at www.veishea.iastate.edu Applications must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2010.
35. ACACIA Leadership Scholarship – Iowa State University
Designed to identify and reward outstanding high school seniors (males) who have demonstrated their ability to excel in the fields of academics, extra-curricular school activities, and community involvement. The scholarship is available to any male who attends Iowa State University. Financial need is not a criteria. Applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2010.
36. Polk Soil & Water Conservation District – Conservation Districts of Iowa Scholarship
This scholarship is being offered to Iowa high school seniors who are pursuing college level programs of study in any field of agriculture or natural resources. Applications can be obtained online at www.cdiowa.org Scholarship amounts vary. The application deadline is March 3, 2010.
37. Veridian Credit Union Scholarship
The 2009 high school scholarship will award one $1,000 scholarship and one $500 scholarship. Entrants must have an account established in their own name and be a member in good standing at Veridian Credit Union. Entrants will be required to write an essay, provide a resume and complete an official entry form. Applications can be found in the Guidance Office or can be done online at www.veridiancu.org All entries must be received by February 5, 2010.
38. Veridian Credit Union ArtShare Scholarship
The ArtShare Scholarship supports the development of outstanding high school students who excel in the arts and who plan to pursue educational programs leading to a career in the arts. This includes, but is not limited to, Art Education, Art History, Ceramics, Design, Jewelry and Metal Arts, Painting and Drawing, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture. Veridian will award one $1,000 scholarship. Entrants will be required to write two essays and complete an official entry form. Entrants must have an account established in their own name and be a member in good standing at Veridian Credit Union. 39. 2010 Youth Scholarship Program For Young People Who are Cancer Patients/Survivors
This scholarship opportunity is for students who have been diagnosed with cancer before the age of 21 who will be attending an accredited two or four year university or vocational/technical school. 40. USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships
USA Funds will award $1,500 scholarships to students with economic need through USA Funds Access to Education Scholarship. The scholarship can be applied to a two year or four year college/university or vocational/technical school. Applications will be accepted through Feb. 15, 2010. 41. The Iowa Automobile Dealers Foundation for Education Scholarship
Applicants must be committed to the pursuit of automotive or truck-related studies, such as technician training, body shop/collision repair, diesel, new vehicle sales, parts sales, accounting, or business administration. The foundation’s selection will be based on the student’s interest and commitment to the automotive industry. Applications must be received by March 15, 2010.
42. Iowa Soybean Association Ag Scholarship
This scholarship is open to high school seniors who are Iowa residents and plan on attending any ag-related college or university (2 or 4 year school). The scholarships are in the amount of $1,500. Applications must be postmarked by March 15, 2010.
43. Ethical Dilemma Scholarship
Mount Mercy SIFE invites high school seniors to participate in their second annual Ethical Dilemma essay challenge with an opportunity to win a $200 scholarship. Students need to attend college in the Fall of 2010 and provide the Mount Mercy SIFE team with the school address to which the money will be sent directly for tuition costs. The essay will be judged on knowledge of the issues, support for your arguments, and your persuasive ability. The form and essay must be postmarked by March 31, 2010.
44. Iowa Music Educators Association Music Education Scholarship
Iowa Music Educators Association (IMEA) offers a $500 scholarship to an Iowa high school senior who intends to major in music education at an Iowa college/university. The $500 scholarship is renewable annually, provided the recipient continues to major in music education at an Iowa college/university. Application materials must be postmarked by March 1, 2010.
45. Iowa’s 2010 Matthew Shepard Scholarship
This scholarship, in honor of Matthew Shepard, promotes tolerance and non-discrimination in Iowa schools and to assist lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Iowa high school students with college financial aid. Applicants should have a high school GPA of 3.0 or better, an ACT score of 22 or better and demonstrable LGBT activism and community service and a history of high moral and ethical standards and conduct. Applications are available online at www.eychanerfoundation.org.
The application deadline is March 31, 2010.
46. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. – Helen Lemme Scholarship
If you are an African American high school senior and live in the toll-free calling area of Des Moines, IA, you are eligible to apply for this scholarship. To be considered you must complete the application, submit three letters of reference, submit a certified copy of your transcript, attach a recent photograph, and have your application postmarked or hand delivered by March 31, 2010.
47. Robert D. Blue Scholarship
The applicant must be an Iowa resident planning on attending an Iowa college/university during the 2009-2010 school year. The application is done online and can be found at www.rdblue.org Each applicant is evaluated upon their high school GPA, financial need, references, and their essay. Each of these four components consists of 25% of the evaluation. The application deadline is May 10, 2010.
48. Beta Sigma Psi Lutheran Fraternity Darryl Jahn Memorial Scholarship
Beta Sigma Psi is a national Lutheran fraternity that provides an environment in which Lutheran men may grow spiritually, scholastically, and socially. This scholarship will be awarded to Lutheran gentlemen entering Iowa State University in the fall of 2010. Two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded. Scholarship criteria includes involvement in church activities, academic achievement, involvement in extra-curricular activities, and personal interview. Applications postmarked prior to February 26, 2010 will be eligible for both of the scholarships. All applications postmarked prior to May 14, 2010 will be eligible for the second scholarship.
49. Sammy 2010 – Body by Milk Scholarship
The SAMMY scholarship rewards student athletes who demonstrate excellence in academics, athletics, community service, leadership and include milk as part of their healthy lifestyles. Applications and official rules are available online at www.sammy.bodybymilk.com until March 5, 2010.
50. Dollars for Scholars
This scholarship is open to all Valley High School and Walnut Creek Campus seniors. Applicants must be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college, receiving credit for the program you are pursuing. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. Applications are judged on 5 criteria: GPA and test scores, EFC (Estimated Family Contribution – from the FAFSA), work experience, school activities, and community involvement. The application asks for relatives who have graduated from Valley. Please indicate their relationship to you only (i.e. aunt, uncle, brother, etc). Do not include their name! Applications must be turned in to Mrs. Newkirk in the Guidance Office no later than April 1, 2010.
51. Polk County Farm Bureau Ag Enhancement Scholarship
The Polk County Farm Bureau will offer ten $2,000 scholarships ($500 for four years) for 2010 high school graduates. Applicants must be a resident of Polk County and be a graduate of a Polk County High School. Applicants must also enroll in a post-secondary school in the state of Iowa, be a full-time student, and be going into an agricultural business related field. Applications must be postmarked by March 31, 2010.
52. Doug Harms ISU Freshman Scholarship - Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity – Iowa State University
Three (3) $500 scholarships are available to male high school graduates who will be attending Iowa State University starting next fall. These awards are based on merit and carry no obligation to join the fraternity. The application must be postmarked no later than March 15, 2010.
53. Sacred heart Catholic School Scholarship
The applicant must have completed and graduated from 8th grade at Sacred Heart Catholic School in West Des Moines, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be involved in school and community activities. The application deadline is March 26, 2010.
54. Capital Striders Running Club Scholarship
The Capital Striders Running Club is offering three (3) $1,000 scholarships to graduating Polk County High School seniors who have lettered in cross-country during the 2009-2010 school year and have been accepted to attend a college, university, or vocational school. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or online at www.CapitalStriders.org. Click on “Info” button on the left side and choose “Scholarships. Applications must be postmarked by April 2, 2010.
55. Larry W. Carter Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is available to any African-American, resident of Iowa enrolled in a full or part-time program (undergraduate or graduate). The recipient must be from a low-income family wherein if the fund was not available, it would be a good possibility he/she would not be able to attend an institution of higher learning. The application needs to be received no later than May 15, 2010.
56. Mary E. Wood Scholarship Fund
The Greater Des Moines Community Foundation is accepting applications to assist African-American students in financing education at a university, college or trade school. Letters of application and attachments must be received by May 15, 2010.
57. Ehlert Educational Grant
This scholarship is intended for a high school graduate with a definite financial need who will be attending a vocational, technical, or trade school. The applicant must be planning on attending an accredited school pursuing training in a specialized skill. A personal interview will be required. Scholarship amount is $1,200. Applications must be turned in to Mrs. Newkirk in the Guidance Office by April 9, 2010.
58. The Iowa Center for the Arts Scholarship
This scholarship is for students going to the University of Iowa with a major in Theatre Arts. The applicant must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and submit official transcripts. Selection will be determined by either an audition of interview and portfolio/resume review. Application deadline is February 26, 2010 and auditions/reviews will be held March 6, 2010.
59. Iowa PGA – Charlie Burkhart Scholarship
Any graduating high school senior who is a resident within the boundaries of the Iowa Section of the PGA is eligible to apply. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of their interest and activity in golf and the potential for future contributions to the game, then on their academic ability and financial need. Applications must be submitted by June 18, 2010.
60. Legal Support Professionals of Polk County Scholarship
This scholarship is offered in the amount of $500 to one individual anticipating a career in law. Those who are pursuing a career as a lawyer, a legal secretary or a paralegal are encouraged to apply. The applicant must have at least a “B” (3.0) grace point average. Applications must be received by February 26, 2010.
61. 2010 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship
This scholarship is based on merit; financial need is not a consideration. An applicant must have a minimum of a 28 ACT and 3.5 GPA; rank in the top 10% of the graduating class, be a legal Iowa resident, have applied or been accepted at an accredited post-secondary school, have completed 3 years of science beyond general science (including 2 years of lab science), 2 years of the same foreign language, 4 years of English, 3 years of social studies and 3 years of math beyond general math and pre-algebra. Community and school involvement, leadership activities, advanced placement, honors and college level course work taken, and a written statement of future goals also will be considered in the selection process. 62. Governor Terry E. Brandstad Iowa State Fair Scholarship
Applicants must have actively participated at the Iowa State Fair (past or present), be a graduating senior from an Iowa high school and plan to enroll at an Iowa college or university. Applications are available online at www.iowacollegeaid.org Applications deadline is May 1, 2010.
63. Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc.
Mrs. Janice M. Scott was a victim of the attacks by terrorists on September 11, 2001. This scholarship was created to honor her legacy. There are six (6) $2,500 scholarships available. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents, have a minimum GPA or 2.5, be a full-time student at an accredited four-year college or university during the 2010-2011 school year, and have demonstrated leadership abilities through participating in community services, extra curricular or other activities. Completed application packets must be received or postmarked on or before March 31, 2010.
64. Thomas J. Goodrich Memorial Wildlife Scholarship
This $350 scholarship is targeted towards students that would like to pursue a career related to wildlife and conservation. The scholarship committee looks for applicants with academic promise and firsthand outdoor knowledge. Scholarship application deadline is April 1, 2010.
65. Mike Siepmann Memorial Scholarship
All applicants must have attended Indian Hills Jr. High for at least 1 (one) full year. Applicants must be planning on attending a 4-year post-secondary institution. Four-five $500 scholarships will be awarded. Applications must be returned to Mrs. Newkirk in the Counseling Office no later than Friday April 9, 2010.
66. Stilwell Junior High School Scholarship
Students who attended Stilwell Junior High School for at least both semesters of their 8th grade year and plan on continuing their education for the 2010-2011 school year are eligible to apply for this $500 scholarship. Criteria to be considered are evidence of living by the 3 Cornerstones of Stilwell – Do the right thing, Do your best, Treat others as you want to be treated. Leadership, service, academic performance and participation in school activities will also be considered. Two letters of reference are required. Application material must be handed in to Mrs. Newkirk in the Guidance Office by May 3, 2010.
67. Kiwanis Club of West Des Moines – Educational Grant
The intent of this scholarship is to give a high school graduate with a definite financial need, an opportunity to begin an education at a one- or two-year post-secondary education program in a vocational or technical field in a public or private school. A personal interview is required. Scholarship amount is $1,200. Applications must be turned in to Mrs. Newkirk in the Guidance Office by April 9, 2010.
68. Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Central Iowa Scholarship
This scholarships is a $500 award to be given to one boy and one girl who have participated in cross-country or track as a senior. Applicants must be a graduating senior from a Des Mines metro area high school in good academic standing. Applications must be postmarked by March 12, 2010.
69. West Des Moines Rotary Club Scholarship
Scholarships for two-year study will be awarded in the amount of $600 to students enrolling at a community or junior college in Iowa in a program of study leading to a diploma or an Associate of Applied Science degree.
Scholarships for four-year study will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 to students enrolling at an Iowa college or university granting a bachelors degree or to students enrolling at a community college in Iowa in an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science program with plans to transfer to a four-year school.
Selection will be based on the following:
- Financial need – 40%,
- Service – 40%, Scholarship – 20%
- CODE Scholarship
The recipient of this $10,000 scholarship must attend a state university or community college. Preference is given to applicants whose parents have not attended college. All application materials must be handed in to Mrs. Gibb in the Counseling Office by May 3, 2010.
70. Principal’s Advisory Council (PAC) Scholarship Award
This award will be given to the one male and one female who best exemplify the spirit of Valley High School. This $500 scholarship can be used at any 4 year college or university. Students must have taken a challenging curriculum and maintained a 3.8 GPA during grades 9-12. In addition to Academics, the student must have participated in at least one Activity, one Athletic team, and been involved in the Arts sometime during grades 9-12. A resume (including leadership in/out of school), a list showing involvement in Community Service, and your participation in the 4 A’s during high school. In addition, two (2) letters of reference are required. Each applicant will also need to write a 300-500 word personal reflection. All the above materials need to be returned to Dr. Poole, Principal, by no later than April 15, 2010.
72. Junior League of Des Moines 2009 Young Women Leaders Scholarship
This scholarship is available to women that are dedicated to volunteering, as well as leaders within their communities and schools. While academic achievement is important, the primary focus in evaluating the applications will be based on the level of volunteer and leadership oriented activities. Three $1,000 scholarships will be award to senior women who plan to attend a college or university next year. Completed applications must be postmarked by April 2, 2010.
73. Learning Disabilities Association of Iowa Scholarship
The Learning Disabilities Association of Iowa will award three $1,000 scholarships to students with learning disabilities in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at an accredited two-or tour-year college or vocational training. Applicants must fully complete and submit four items: 1) the scholarship application, 2) essay, 3) a publicity form, and 4) an entire current IEP. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2010.
74. KAPSI Achiever Scholarship
Applicants for this scholarship must be U.S. citizens, reside in the state of Iowa, and be a member of a racial minority group. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA, community leadership and extra curricular involvement, documented financial need, and personal recommendations. Application deadline is March 30, 2010.
75. Dan Oppenheim Jr. Memorial Scholarship
This $2,500 scholarship is for students going on to a four year college or university. Financial need will be a strong consideration as will the student athlete’s record of academic and athletic potential. The applicant must have competed in at least one sport in each of their four years at Valley, having earned at least two varsity letters. Applications must be in to Mrs. Newkirk in the Guidance Office by Friday, April 2, 2010.
