On March 26, 2012, the West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education adopted a revised budget for the Valley High School renovation project. The new total project budget is $66.4 million. This is a $3.8 million increase over the $62.6 million budget approved by the board in December 2010.

Students Teach Students About Bullying Prevention

Drew, a sixth grader at Crossroads Park Elementary, stands at a microphone in the gym before about 550 of his classmates.

Being in front of an audience is nothing new to him. Drew has been dancing since he was very young and has performed in such productions as the Iowa Dance Theater’s “The Nutcracker.”

Today, however, he won’t be dancing and the topic isn’t festive. Drew and about 15 of his classmates are performing a skit about bullying.

It is a topic Drew understands.

Workshop

The WDMCS Board of Education held a workshop on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011. No action is taken at workshops. These meetings, which are open to the public, provide a time for board members to learn more about a topic or area of the district. During the November 7th meeting, the district’s Teaching & Learning Services department reviewed the Program of Studies Proposals for 2012-13. The documents presented are available here.

The program of studies includes courses or subject areas taught in grades K-12. The program of studies is reviewed each year. For the current review process, staff members submit course proposals, which are then reviewed by administrators, the Site Curriculum Council, the Teaching & Learning Services Advisory Council, the Teaching & Learning Services department, and the Superintendency. The district also conducts a regular review of curriculum used by the district. This review – or curriculum cycle – is included in the process (more…)

Positioned Perfectly to Address Our Challenges

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NLn7yQumvo]I began my work in the West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) on July 1 meeting with the school board, with staff and some community members. I have also had the opportunity to participate in several statewide education-related activities like the Governor’s Education Summit.

I recently had the opportunity to share with the district staff the five challenges for the WDMCS in the coming months and into next year that I have been able to identify so far:

  1. Changing leadership;
  2. Changing demographics;
  3. State/federal budget reductions;
  4. State educational reform; and
  5. NCLB reauthorization. (more…)

Getting to Know Superintendent Peter Ansingh

I would like to begin by thanking you all for the warm welcome to West Des Moines and to the WDMCS. I hope to meet more of you as the school year progresses. Until then please let me share a little bit about myself.

As I have been able to share with some you, I claim to be a Dutchman; my family immigrated to this country when I was four years old. I grew up in the Seattle area and attended Pacific Lutheran University intending to follow in my father’s footsteps as a physician. That was not to be; I finished my four years with a new-found faith in Christ and a degree in chemistry.  I then went off to the University of Wyoming to pursue what I thought would be a career in petroleum engineering. After a couple of months in classes like muds and drilling, I walked over to the College of Education and asked what I needed to do to become a teacher. I finished the requirements for a teaching certificate and a master’s degree in chemistry. (more…)
