History

Westridge Elementary is one of nine elementary schools in the West Des Moines Community School District. Located in the southwest corner of the intersection of Interstates 80 and 35, our doors opened in 1990. Westridge is an 85,000-square-foot facility that was designed with learning in mind. There are four sections or classrooms at each grade level.

The facility is divided into pods that create a school within a school. The media center acts as the hub for the school and is easily accessible from the classrooms. The floor plan, lighting, carpeting, even the natural lighting, contribute to an environment that incites learning. The National School Board Association, in cooperation with The American Institute of Architects, selected Westridge Elementary School for its 1991 Exhibition of School Architecture. The building was noted as the best designed facility for learning. We continue to find ways to use our building that will enhance the learning of our students.

The parents of our school district place a high value on education. Our PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is very active in the school. Over 200 volunteers provide additional support to the classroom. You can visit our building at any time and find parents, students and staff working in partnership throughout the day. Parents participate on a variety of committees. They are involved in the staff selection, school safety, Talking Canvas, Junior Lego League, book clubs, fundraising, educational and site improvement committees and much more!

Westridge has a staff of approximately 75 adults and they all work together to create an environment that nurtures, enhances and supports learning for every student. It is an enthusiastic, innovative group of adults dedicated to high standards of learning and who emphasize that learning is fun. Our curriculum is implemented in a variety of modes involving researched-based teaching and learning practices, which include many hands-on opportunities for our students. Our students participate in grade-level buddy partnerships, character activities, business partner lunches, and a cross integration of special needs students in the classrooms. Westridge Elementary is in the forefront of academic growth and achievement while developing wonderful children of character. Our students have so much fun doing what is planned for them that they don’t realize they are learning!
