On behalf of the Parent Faculty Club (PFC), we would like to welcome the new and returning students and families to Phenix. The PFC is a dedicated organization of parents and staff who contribute time, money and support to our school. We are lucky to have so many parents who recognize the importance of a parent’s role in developing and implementing programs that enhance their child’s educational experience.
Our monthly PFC meetings provide an avenue for people to actively volunteer, or maybe just be there to help give a broader perspective on how to handle things, at your child’s school. There are many different committees and events that need volunteers to get the job done. Whether you want to sign up to be a PFC board member or you would rather just serve Kool-aid at the spaghetti supper, every job is considered to be important and greatly appreciated. We can always find a place for a willing hand.
Throughout this school year we will be working together with the principal, the teachers and staff members to help create an environment that will enrich your child’s education now and help the staff in implementing the groundwork that will encourage them to be lifelong learners.
We look forward to working with you and appreciate your support!
To promote the welfare of the children and the school by promoting family involvement through various functions, including; Spaghetti/Bingo Nights, Skate Nights, Movie Nights, Fall Dance, Spring Carnival and Burger King Nights.
Present: Janea Balsley, Principal Boyd, Brian Crees, Shelley Seely, Tasha Palmer, Amy Dougherty, Kris Hall, Michelle Johnson, Judy Verro, Nicole Redden
The meeting started at 6:30 PM
Principal Boyd kicked off the meeting with a huge welcome to all who attended the meeting.
Principal’s Report
Ms. Boyd talked about having a Target card and that her points haven’t been transferred to Phenix yet but that she needs to get that done. She encouraged us to have our cards registered to Phenix so we could get our points forwarded over. There are only 15 people who have there card points being directed to Phenix currently.
She will have some information on some grants given to Phenix for school improvements. More details to come.
She talked about some vandalism problems that had occurred during the summer in the playground. Litter was out of control but it was decided after 9/11/01 that no trash receptacles could be left outside of the school. Vandals had also spray painted the table in the south playground. After speaking with the district and City, it was decided to move the tables and benches from the south playground, remove some tree limbs to increase lighting, and install some signage saying that school premises are for children playing on equipment only. The tables have already been re-painted by the school staff.
Ms. Boyd discussed the purpose of the PFC and some initiatives that we help support, volunteer for, approve budget for, or help create.
There was a question on the dates and times of the PFC meetings. They are normally held the 2nd Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. but there are a few changes in dates this year. Notice will be given in the newsletter that will go home in each child’s folders each week.
YMCA Memberships – we again received full memberships for all Phenix families as of September 15th. There will be a note coming home in your child’s folder to pick up a certificate for the membership. They must be picked up on time and taken to the YMCA by October 30th to be honored. Michelle on hospitality will select a plant for the YMCA for a thank you and Ms. Boyd will have our children writing thank you notes to the Board.
President’s Report
We discussed the fall fundraiser being kicked off September 19th. Packets are due back to the school on September 30th and the items from Great American will be delivered to the school on October 23rd. It was decided last year to go with Great American for the major fundraising efforts of the school due to cost, quality of product, selection, and ease of ordering and accounting.
We discussed the Sam’s Club membership that we had purchased last fall for the faculty and it was decided it was not a good use of money.
Homecoming Week – September 22-26. The theme is “Change the World”
- Spirit Week during school was discussed and decided as follows:
- Monday – pajama day or comfy sweats day
- Tuesday – crazy hair day (also “Go Green Day” so canned food collected)
- Wednesday – Tie Dye day
- Thursday – Spirit Day (wear Phenix or Valley shirt / colors)
- Friday – Sports Day (wear favorite sports team shirt / costume) – No paraphernalia, please such as footballs, hockey sticks, etc.
- We will have float at stadium at 4:30 pm on 9/25 to decorate and get kids & parents on board. If you would like to help decorate, you are welcome. Brian Crees was able to find the 20’ trailer to haul people.
- We are still looking for hay bails for the float so let Mary Stillwell know if you have any great connections.
- At 5:30 pm there will be a barbeque at the stadium for a minimal amount of money.
- At 5:30 pm Phenix will have a booth at the stadium with a sucker tree game set up for kids and prizes. Tasha agreed to help decorate the booth and anybody who can help man the booth or the games can contact Mary Stillwell to get involved.
- Mary will go to Nobbies to get suckers for game and for parade.
Fall Family Night – Friday, October 24th
We discussed as a committee and decided to have the kids dressed in costume again. They are free to bring blankets and pillows and a movie will be watched. Please let Mary Stillwell know if there is a “G” rated movie that will be coming out soon that we can show. Popcorn, twizzlers, and bottled water will be served. A canned food will be the admission price.
PBS (Positive Behavior Support)
Seniora Day spoke to the group about tiger paws and the importance to our kids. She talked about the Paw Shop and how kids use their tiger paws to purchase toys as an incentive to behaving well. The Tiger Paw Shop needs more toys and there is already $500 in the budget allocated to this purchase so Mary will stock up.
We conducted an election of more officers for the positions of Treasurer and Secretary. Tasha Palmer agreed to be our Secretary taking notes at each meeting and distributing minutes and Nicole Redden agreed to be our Treasurer. At the October meeting we will swear in our new officers and get Nicole the most current budget. Thank you for volunteering!
