The WDMCS Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES) department collaborated with the state universities to put on the Elementary School World Language Workshop Feb. 18.  Teachers from all over the state attended the event to network, share ideas and learn more about teaching foreign language at the elementary level.  Four teachers from the WDMCS shared their expertise with their colleagues.  Their presentations included:

  • Amy Murphy, Fairmeadows and Clive FLES teacher
    • Teaching with PowerPoint:  Creating Works of Art
  • Shanon Shreffler, Crossroads Park and Western Hills FLES teacher
    • Making Professional Connections
  • Candace Sherwood, Jordan Creek FLES teacher
    • Rhymes, Mimes and Pantomimes
  • Tammy Dann, Crestview and Clive FLES teacher
    • Partner “Gap” Activities

Immediately after presenting, Amy Murphy was invited to repeat her presentation for the afternoon workshop of the Iowa World Language Association’s conference in the fall.

The FLES program has been a leader in both the state and nation for the 17 years it has been in existence.  Its curriculum and materials are published online at www.wdmcs.org/fles.  The program’s scope and sequence is viewed as the gold standard for curriculum and has been used as a model for programs around the nation.
