Board Considers Interim Superintendent Candidates Wednesday

At a special meeting on Monday, May 20, the West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) Board of Education decided to consider Hillside Elementary Principal Dr. Robert Davis and WDMCS Associate Superintendent Dr. Lisa Remy for the district’s interim superintendent position.

The Board will interview and consider Davis and Remy during a special meeting on Wednesday, May 22 at 7 a.m. at Walnut Creek Campus.

Davis received his bachelor’s degree in elementary educationĀ and master’s degree elementary administration from the University of Northern Iowa. He earned his doctorate in elementary education from the University of Iowa. Davis began his career in education as a fifth grade teacher at Grundy Center Community Schools. He later served as a fifth grade teacher at Horn Elementary, assistant principal of Northwest Junior High and principal of Kirkwood Elementary schools in Iowa City, He came to the West Des Moines Community Schools in 1991, serving as Crestview Elementary principal. He also served as principal of Rex Mathes and Clegg Park Elementary schools before taking his current position as principal at Hillside Elementary.

Remy received her bachelor’s degree in education, master’s degree in Spanish teaching, superintendent’s certification and doctorate degree in educational administration from the University of Northern Iowa. She began her career in education as a Spanish teacher at Hudson Community School in Hudson, Iowa. She later served as high school principal at Hudson. She came to the West Des Moines Community Schools in 2000, serving as associate principal of Valley High School. She served as principal of Indian Hills Junior High before taking her current position as associate superintendent of human resources.

The two current employees were the only internal candidates who submitted a statement of interest by the May 20 deadline set by the Board for those interested in the temporary position. Two former employees, Harrison Cass, Jr. and Arlis Swartzendruber, also submitted statements of interest. Cass served the district from 1979 to 1990 as principal of Clegg Park Elementary, principal of Western Hills Elementary and associate executive director of educational services. Swartzendruber served the district from 1977 to 1988 as a curriculum coordinator, director of curriculum and finally as associate executive director of educational services.

Board Vice President Mark Lagomarcino thanked the Cass and Swartzendruber for their interest in helping the district.

The Board is seeking an interim superintendent after it approved a separation agreement with Dr. Peter Ansingh on May 9.
