| Removing the Barriers Campaign
Removing the Barriers provides private funds to ensure that all
students – regardless of their means – have the opportunity
to reach their full potential. Through this ongoing annual campaign,
the Foundation expands opportunities for all students, especially
those who can’t participate in educational or extracurricular
activities without assistance.
P.M. Plus funds pay for after-school tutoring and counseling for
students whose work is below grade level. There is a three-for-one
funding match by the State of Iowa on all targeted giving in this
category.
SummerShips funds provide fees and transportation for economically
disadvantaged grade school children who wish to participate in
summer school classes.
WDMoreSports funds help pay for sports equipment for the various
intramural sports programs. Additional sports such as lacrosse
and table tennis are growing in popularity and participation with
the help of the funds.
Equal-Op Banishing Barriers funds cover transportation, entry
fees, uniforms, equipment and travel expenses for disadvantaged
youth who otherwise could not afford to participate in extracurricular
activities.
Teachers’ SupFunds help educators purchase special educational
materials they otherwise would pay for themselves or do without.
During the 2004/05 school year, $35,000 was
used to support the five programs listed above – impacting
more than 200 students in the West Des Moines Community School
District! The Foundation Board of Directors has committed $37,500
for our programs in the 2005/06 school year, and by leveraging
the matching grants available in the P.M. Plus program, we will
have a greater ability to help our students who are identified
as being at-risk. We look forward to making a difference in the
lives of our students!
Removing the Barriers is successful thanks to the generous
donations of community members and businesses. To continue to
fund the program at its current level and to account for additional
need in the district, the Foundation needs to raise at least $40,000
per year through donations. Please consider supporting the Foundation
as we embark on our 2005/06 campaign.
