Being a Writer
This piece of writing is a selection from an amazing Fairmeadows Elementary student, Mara. She is writing multiple chapters in a book about her pet cat, Dominic, from the perspective of the cat. "The Christmas Tree Fit" is a fine example of how students can use their creativity within the scope of genres presented in the language arts curriculum. Enjoy!
"The Christmas Tree Fit":
I have been living with the Akers now for four months. Most of the time it’s pretty boring. Then one night, I had one of the most ecstatic and confusing nights of my life.
My owners set up a huge tree with lights and bulbs, just for me to climb. I wanted to boast, “My owners set up a tree, my very own, for just me to climb.” I felt truly special. When the tree was up, naturally I walked over and tried a little taste..., “umm, chewy.”
I started climbing. Whoosh! Something hit me on my back. I hunched up and started back up again, more stuff on my back! I jumped out, knocking two of the fake branches out as I did. I stood there, staring.
I finally got the message, but I always sneaked back and sat in the tree, looking outside until someone would shout, “Dominic!” Then I sprint out, as fast as I could.
