The
West Des Moines Community School District (WDMCSD) strives
to create a technology-rich environment for our entire learning
community. The district's commitment to technology is longstanding
and deep: It has been a state and national leader in making
a wide range of technologies available to students, staff,
and other learners. The district's first technology plan was
created in 1996 and the district continues to provide access
to a wide variety of technology.
Classroom
Expectations
The district has created a list
of grade level expectations to assist the community with
understanding what types of technologies and usage is appropriate.
The list was created by a committee of staff members who utilized
the National
Education Technology Standards (NETS).
Standard
Classroom Technology
The standard elementary classroom contains 4 or 5 desktop
computers. At the secondary level, all classrooms contain
at least one desktop computer. In addition, all buildings
are outfitted with computer labs and/or mobile wireless laptop
carts. Selected buildings have received mounted A/V systems
which provide full screen viewing of a variety of multimedia
sources including Internet, computer applications, VHS, DVD,
etc. Additional school sites will receive the A/V systems
as funding becomes available.
Infrastructure
In order to provide cost effective and reliable services,
the district utilizes a fiber optic wide area network that
connects all district facilities. The creation of this network
was created through WestNET, a cooperative partnership between
the West Des Moines Schools, City of West Des Moines, City
of Clive, City of Urbandale, and the Iowa Communications Network.
Communications
Technologies
Through the use of Infinite
Campus, the district provides students and families with
live access to grades, attendance, and other student information.
In addition, Campus and other systems are used to provide
communication avenues with our community.
