4th Grade Technology Guidelines

All students should have opportunities to demonstrate the following skills and behaviors prio to the completion of 4th grade.

STANDARD 1: Basic operations and concepts

  • Use input devices (e.g., mouse and keyboard) and output devices (e.g., monitor and printer) devices efficiently and effectively.
    • Able to take pictures with a digital camera for classroom use and transfer those files into a document or file.
    • Be able to do basic problem solving if something isn’t working (monitor on, paper in printer, choosing appropriate printer)
  • Reinforce basic keyboarding skills
    • Increased efficiency in the areas of accuracy and speed.
    • Introduce Reach keys.
  • Communicates about technology using developmentally appropriate vocabulary.
    • Applies words such as key-stroke combinations, web address, function keys, hyperlink, etc.

STANDARD 2: Social, ethical and human issues

  • Demonstrate positive social and ethical behaviors when using technology.
    • Discuss basic issues related to responsible use of technology and information (advantages and disadvantages) and describe consequences of inappropriate use.
    • Introduce research skills such as citing sources, putting information into own words, and summarizing.

STANDARD 3: Technology productivity tools

  • Use curriculum-based programs to facilitate learning throughout the curriculum.
    • (Kidspiration, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Power Point, Mapmaker’s Toolkit, Timeliner)
  • Reinforce word processing skills (Microsoft Word)
    • Review saving and retrieving documents, spacing, tab
    • Screen View: Maximize & minimize screen, Zoom vs. font size and color
    • Insert and format pictures from clipart, Internet, and scanning
    • Word art and text boxes
    • Cut, copy and paste

STANDARD 4: Technology communication tools

  • Use technology tools to communicate individual or collaborative projects for audiences inside and/or outside the classroom.
    • Introduce presentation software (Microsoft Power Point)
  • Use telecommunications efficiently to access Internet sites, communicate with others in support of direct and independent learning, and pursue personal interests.

STANDARD 5: Technology research tools

  • Use the technology resources as a mode to access information.
    • Internet
    • Subscription Databases

STANDARD 6: Technology problem-solving and decision-making tools

  • Use technology resources for problem solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.
    • Calculators, videos, and educational software.
  • Use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activity.
    • Navigate the Internet
    • Discuss the relevance and appropriateness of electronic information sources.
    • Discuss the process of evaluating web sites for validity.
  • Determine which technology is useful and select the appropriate tool(s) and technology resources to address a variety of tasks and problems.
