Public health officials predict another wave of influenza-like illness to occur in late January and February, during the usual time Iowa has the highest rate of influenza activity. Vaccination, as soon as possible, will give protection against this next wave of illness. Kids under 10 need to have two doses to be fully protected. While many parents have already done the right thing but getting their kids vaccinated, there are still over 11,000 kids in Polk County who have not had their second dose yet. The second dose should be given at least 28 days after the first dose. The vaccine is easier to get, there are no more lines and no more waiting. Free clinics are open at Moore Elementary School (52nd & Douglas) every Monday-Friday 11-6:30 and Saturdays 10-2.
Please continue the excellent work with prevention activities including frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when ill, and wiping hard surcease with soap and water to prevent the spread of influenza.
The most important message: If your child has flu-like symptoms, please keep him/her home for at least 24 hours after your child is fever free without the use of fever reducers (aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc.). Schools will continue to apply disinfectant solution to classroom desks and tabletops at least twice a day. Every effort is made to hold back the spread of germs at school.
For the latest updates, please call the Polk County Health Department H1N1 phone line at 323-5330 or visit their Web site.
