Reading

Standard #1: Reading for Information:
Students will read and understand informational materials, describe characteristics of informational text and use facts, ideas and perspectives in developing concepts.

  • k.1.a   Understand the difference between fiction and nonfiction books.

Standard #2: Reading Literature:
Students will read and understand a variety of classic and contemporary literature representing diverse historical and cultural perspectives to build an understanding of themselves and others, their environment and the world.

  • k.2.b  Understand that a book tells a story.

Standard #3: Process of Reading:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the reading process by using reading and thinking skills and strategies to achieve their purposes in reading.

  • k.3.c   Understand and demonstrate most concepts about print.

Standard #4: Literacy Communities:
Students will recognize the value of personal and social connection of reading, read to satisfy personal interests, and to establish, maintain and enhance personal relationships with others.

  • k.4.d   Enjoy reading and sharing ideas with others.

Mathematics

Standard #1:    
Students will use mathematics to solve problems, communicate, and work with others.

  • k.1.a    use strategies and manipulatives to accurately find the answer when told a number story (ordinal, +, -, counting, etc.).

  • k.1.b verbally describe how they solve problems in a variety of situations (think aloud).
               

Standard #2:    
Students will use measurement skills.

  • k.2.c    use calendar terms to measure time (days, weeks, months, seasons).

  • k.2.d    demonstrate an understanding of the comparison terms more, less, equal to.

Standard #3:    
Students will use reasoning skills, mental mathematics, and estimation skills.

  • k.3.e    recognize when an estimation is accurate.

Standard #4:    
Students will perform mathematical operations and see relationships among numbers.

  • k.4.f     demonstrate number sense through counting with 1:1 correspondence, and number seriation.
  • k.4.g    demonstrate operation sense at the concept level by using role play/manipulatives to solve single digit addition and subtraction problems in a variety of situations (number stories, interpreting graphs, calendar activities).

Standard #5:    
Students will demonstrate a development of spatial sense.

  • k.5.h    name the shapes circle, oval, rectangle, square, diamond and triangle.
  • k.5.i     copy a 2-dimensional form from a 3-dimensional form.

Standard #6:    
Students will collect and analyze data.

  • k.6.j     interpret data from a graph.
  • k.6.k    demonstrate the ability to sort and classify objects by a variety of attributes.

Standard #7:    
Students will use patterns and relationships to solve problems.

  • k.7.l     count by 1s to 100.
  • k.7.m   skip count by 10s to 100.
  • k.7.n    recognize, describe, extend, and create a wide variety of patterns.

General Music

Standard #1:    
Students will perform music alone and with others.

  • 1.a.  Students will sing echo sing 4 beat melodic patterns alone and with the class using their singing voice.

Standard #2:    
Students will read and write music.

  • 2.b.  Students will read and perform rhythmic icons demonstrating steady beat.

Standard #3:    
Students will listen and respond to a varied repertoire of music.

  • 3.c.  Students will identify the call and response form.

Standard #4:    
Students will describe music as it relates to history, culture, and diversity.

  • 4.d.  Students will identify the use of the lullaby in their daily experiences, and describe characteristics that make the music suitable for that use.

Visual Arts

Standard #1: Aesthetic Perception:
To inquire into the nature, beauty, and experiences of art through sensory perception.

  • k.1.a. The student will communicate his/her ideas about art and the surrounding world.

Standard #2: Art Criticism:
To observe, reflect, and understand the characteristics and significance of one's own artwork and the artwork of others.

  • k.2.b. The student will describe ideas or feelings connected with the viewing or making of art.

Standard #3: Art History:
To acquire knowledge of historical and cultural development through varying aesthetic points of view.

  • k.3.c. The student will compare characteristics of art works in various eras and cultures

Standard #4: Art Production:
To create and express ideas through a variety of media, techniques, and processes.

  • k.4.d. The student will use a variety of media, techniques and processes to express meaning through art.

World Languages

Standard #1: Communication:
Students understand and interpret spoken and written communication in the target language on a variety of topics.

Standard #2: Cultures:
Students will demonstrate an awareness of the cultures of the target languages.

Standard #3: Connections:
Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the target language.

Standard #4: Comparisons:
Students will develop insight into their own language and culture through the study of the target language and culture.

Standard #5: Communities:
Students will participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.

Writing

Standard #1:
Students engage in the writing process: All students will plan, write and revise while identifying personal strengths and weaknesses in writing.

  • k.1.a. Students will tell what they write about. They will draw, write and read the story.
  • k.1.b. Students will demonstrate and apply conventions of English. Students will use inventive spelling and pictures to record their thoughts.

Standard #2:
Students write for a variety of purposes and audiences: All students will demonstrate an understanding of purpose and audience in their writing.

  • k.2.c. Students will gather and organize information. Students will draw a picture of themselves in a setting (fall and spring) Descriptive genre.
