Reading

Standard #1: Reading for Information:
Students will read and understand informational materials, describe characteristics of informational text and use facts, ideas and perspectives in developing concepts.

  • 9-12.1.a Critically evaluate multiple sources of information and select relevant ideas in formulating purposeful response.

Standard #2: Reading Literature:
Students will read and understand a variety of classic and contemporary literature representing diverse historical and cultural perspectives to build an understanding of themselves and others, their environment and the world.

  • 9-12.2.b Read, interpret, and analyze a variety of perspectives to recognize the role literature plays in developing a worldview.

Standard #3: Process of Reading:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the reading process by using reading and thinking skills and strategies to achieve their purposes in reading.

  • 9-12.3.c Students will refine and adapt their reading process as they establish comprehension and expand their view of themselves in the world.

Standard #4: Literacy Communities:
Students will recognize the value of personal and social connection of reading, read to satisfy personal interests, and to establish, maintain and enhance personal relationships with others.

Mathematics

Standard #1:
Students will use mathematics to solve problems, communicate, and work with others.

  • 11.1.a write algebraic expressions.

Standard #2:
Students will use measurement skills.

  • 11.2.d use a formula to determine the area of a plane figure.
  • 11.2.e use a formula to determine the volume of a solid figure.
  • 11.2.f use a formula to determine the lateral area and total surface area of a figure.

Standard #3:
Students will use reasoning skills, mental mathematics, and estimation skills.

  • 11.3.g use deductive reasoning to make a valid conclusion.
  • 11.3.h use divisibility rules and the ability to multiply and divide by powers of 10.
  • 11.3.i use rounding and estimation.

Standard #4:
Students will perform mathematical operations and see relationships among numbers.

Standard #1:
Students will understand major concepts in earth science and how these apply to society.

  • 12.1.c identify natural factors that affect the earth’s surface.

Standard #2:
Students will understand major concepts in life science and how these apply to society.

  • 12.2.d understand that populations of organisms change over time.
  • 12.2.e identify factors affecting transmission of disease.
  • 12.2.f understand that DNA is the common thread of living organisms.

Standard #3:
Students will understand major concepts in physical science and how these apply to society.

  • 12.3.g understand the structure of the atom.
  • 12.3.h understand forces acting on macroscopic and microscopic objects.
  • 12.3.i identify forms of energy and energy transfer.
  • 12.3.j understand the properties of matter through physical and chemical changes.

Standard #4:
Students will use scientific inquiry process (e.g. questioning, observing, predicting, experimenting, controlling variables, concluding) to understand the natural world.

  • 12.4.k construct or develop a graph from experimental data.
  • 12.4.l determine relationship between variables by interpreting graph/chart/table (visual representation of data).

  • 9-12.1.b. The student will understand why we create art based on a personal, social or physical function.
  • 9-12.1.c. The student will define their criteria for the value of various art forms.
  • 9-12.1.d. The students will inquire into the significance of the art of others based on content, technique and form.

Standard #2: Art Criticism:
To observe, reflect, and understand the characteristics and significance of one's own artwork and the artwork of others.

  • 9-12.2.e. The student will develop individual criteria to validate personal opinions and emotions.

Standard #3: Art History:
To acquire knowledge of historical and cultural development through varying aesthetic points of view.

  • 9-12.3.f. The student will understand that personal expression plays a vital role in every culture and is a reflection of that culture.

To create and express ideas through a variety of media, techniques, and processes.

World Languages

Standard #1: Communication:
Students understand and interpret spoken and written communication in the target language on a variety of topics.
