Reading

Standard #1: Reading for Information:
Students will read and understand informational materials, describe characteristics of informational text and use facts, ideas and perspectives in developing concepts.

  • 6.1.a Develop and use strategies for locating information and integrating information from multiple resources.

Standard #2: Reading Literature:
Students will read and understand a variety of classic and contemporary literature representing diverse historical and cultural perspectives to build an understanding of themselves and others, their environment and the world.

  • 6.2.b Question, interpret and infer meaning of text to make personal connections.

Standard #3: Process of Reading:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the reading process by using reading and thinking skills and strategies to achieve their purposes in reading.

  • 6.3.c Independently infer and evaluate meaning from text.

Standard #4: Literacy Communities:
Students will recognize the value of personal and social connection of reading, read to satisfy personal interests, and to establish, maintain and enhance personal relationships with others.

Mathematics

Standard #1:
Students will use mathematics to solve problems, communicate, and work with others.

  • 6.1.a use correct operations to solve multiple-step problems.
  • 6.1.b use strategies (draw a picture, make a table, etc.) to solve nonroutine problems.

Standard #2:
Students will use measurement skills.

  • 6.2.c find area of quadrilateral.
  • 6.2.d find perimeter of quadrilateral.
  • 6.2.e find volume of rectangular prism.

Standard #3:
Students will use reasoning skills, mental mathematics, and estimation skills.

  • 6.3.f use estimation to solve decimal problems.

Standard #4:
Students will perform mathematical operations and see relationships among numbers.

  • 6.4.g convert simple fractions to percents.
  • 6.4.h convert simple fractions to decimals.
  • 6.4.i convert exponents to equivalent whole number standard form.
  • 6.4.j divide with decimals in divisors.
  • 6.4.k add and subtract with fractions (unlike denominators).

Standard #5:
Students will demonstrate a development of spatial sense.

Science

Standard #1:
Students will understand major concepts in earth science and how these apply to society.

  • 6.1.a recognize that patterns of stars in the sky stay the same, although they appear to move across the sky nightly, and different stars can be seen in different seasons.
  • 6.1.b describe that stars differ from each other in size, temperature, age and color.
  • 6.1.c describe the role mythology plays in astronomy.

Standard #2:
Students will understand major concepts in life science and how these apply to society.

  • 6.2.d state why there are variations among characteristics.
  • 6.2.e compare and contrast a DNA strand to an RNA strand.
  • 6.2.f identify the parts of a cell.

Standard #3:
Students will understand major concepts in physical science and how these apply to society.

  • 6.3.g identify the parts of an eye.
  • 6.3.h identify the differences between reflection and refraction.
  • 6.3.i label the parts of an atom.
  • 6.3.j identify the electrical charges of each part of an atom.
  • 6.3.k recognize the different types of lenses and mirrors.
  • 6.3.l diagram the behavior of light as it strikes different mirrors and lenses.
  • 6.3.m state the elements in different molecules.
  • 6.3.n identify the number of atoms in a molecule.

Standard #4:
Students will use scientific inquiry processes (e.g. questioning, observing, predicting, experimenting, controlling variables, concluding) to understand the natural world.

  • 6.4.o identify the variables in a given experiment.
  • 6.4.p accurately use scientific equipment.
  • 6.4.q demonstrate appropriate lab behaviors.

Standard #5:
Students will recognize the inter-relationships among the earth, life, and physical sciences and their effect on the environment.

  • 6.5.r identify why the wetlands are a valuable ecosystem.
  • 6.5.s understand that two types of organisms in a wetland may interact with one another in several ways (producer/consumer, predator/prey, or parasite/host relationship).
  • 6.5.t understand that human beings are part of the earth’s wetlands; human activities can, deliberately or inadvertently, alter the balance in the wetland.

Standard #6:
Students will know the needs, functions, and systems of the human body, as it develops into an adult.

  • 6.6.u state the six essential nutrients for life.
  • 6.6.v identify the glands of the endocrine system.
  • 6.6.w calculate genetic phenotypes.

Social Studies

Standard #1:
The student will use maps, charts, graphs and timelines.

  • 5-6.1.a Interpret political and physical maps.
  • 5-6.1.b Use longitude and latitude to plot specific locations.
  • 5-6.1.c Read time zones on maps.
  • 5-6.1.d Interpret information given on charts, graphs and timelines.

Standard #2:
The student will demonstrate research skills.

  • 5-6.2.e Evaluate research materials to determine best sources.
  • 5-6..2.f Develop a bibliography of sources used.

Standard #3:
The student will demonstrate cultural awareness.

  • 5-6.3.g Describe some of the various cultures found in our world.

Standard #4:
The student will demonstrate a geographic perspective.

  • 5-6.4.h Explain and give an example of how the location and resources of an area influence/contribute to that area’s culture and/or economy.

Standard #5:
The student will demonstrate participatory citizenship.

  • 5-6.5.i Respond to a contemporary community issue with a personal action (i.e., a letter, community service project, etc.).

Standard #6:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of democracy.

  • 5-6.6.j Identify the characteristics of a democratic form of government.

General Music

Standard #1:
Students will perform music alone and with others.

  • 1.a. Students will perform 2-part composition.

Standard #2:
Students will read and write music.

  • 2.b. Students will write and perform a 4 measure original composition including the rhythm, melody, and I, IV, V chord harmony.

Standard #3:
Students will listen and respond to a varied repertoire of music.

  • 3.c. Students will identify the sections in a sonata form.

Standard #4:
Students will describe music as it relates to history, culture, and diversity.

  • 4.d. Students will identify and describe music in relation to the Mexican and Latin American culture.

Band

Standard #1:
Students will perform a varied repertoire of music, alone and with others.

  • 1.a. Students will perform alone and with others on their instrument.

Standard #2:
Students will read and notate music.

  • 2.b. Students will demonstrate the ability to read quarter, half, whole, eighth, dotted and sixteenth notes and rests in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, alla breve and 6/8 meter signatures.
  • 2.c. Students read at sight simple melodies.

Standard #3:
Students will listen, reflect, and respond to the characteristics and merits of music.

  • 3.d. Students use appropriate terminology in explaining music, music notation, musical instruments, and music performances.
  • 3.e. Students devise criteria for evaluating performances (e.g., technique, musical effect, tone, attack and release, balance and blend).

Visual Arts

Standard #1: Aesthetic Perception:
To inquire into the nature, beauty, and experiences of art through sensory perception.

  • 6.1.a. The student will communicate his/her ideas about art and the surrounding world.

Standard #2: Art Criticism:
To observe, reflect, and understand the characteristics and significance of one's own artwork and the artwork of others.

  • 6.2.b. The student will describe ideas or feelings connected with the viewing or making of art.

Standard #3: Art History:
To acquire knowledge of historical and cultural development through varying aesthetic points of view.

  • 6.3.c. The student will compare characteristics of art works in various eras and cultures

Standard #4: Art Production:
To create and express ideas through a variety of media, techniques, and processes.

  • 6.4.d. The student will use a variety of media, techniques and processes to express meaning through art.

World Languages

Standard #1: Communication:
Students understand and interpret spoken and written communication in the target language on a variety of topics.

Standard #2: Cultures:
Students will demonstrate an awareness of the cultures of the target languages.

Standard #3: Connections:
Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the target language.

Standard #4: Comparisons:
Students will develop insight into their own language and culture through the study of the target language and culture.

Standard #5: Communities:
Students will participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.

Writing

Standard #1:
Students engage in the writing process: All students will plan, write and revise while identifying personal strengths and weaknesses in writing. 6.1.a. Students will brainstorm, draft, revise, and edit a descriptive or narrative piece of writing.

  • 6.1.b. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the principles of language. They will use a variety of stylistic techniques and transfer conventions in writing.
  • 6.1.c. Students will complete “on demand” writing (Iowa Writing Assessment, Expository and/or Persuasive)

Standard #2:
Students write for a variety of purposes and audiences: All students will demonstrate an understanding of purpose and audience in their writing.

  • 6.2.d. Students will gather and organize information. They will write a report responding to an issue, taking a “pro and con” position. (Persuasive genre)
  • 6.2.e. Students will write pieces using four genre. (Narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive) utilizing writing rubrics. Students will reflect on the characteristics of the genre. They will complete a writing log.
