Reading

Standard #1: Reading for Information:
Students will read and understand informational materials, describe characteristics of informational text and use facts, ideas and perspectives in developing concepts.

  • 3.1.a Organize and classify items from informational text.

Standard #2: Reading Literature:
Students will read and understand a variety of classic and contemporary literature representing diverse historical and cultural perspectives to build an understanding of themselves and others, their environment and the world.

  • 3.2.b Demonstrate an understanding of story structure, author’s intent, and meaning.

Standard #3: Process of Reading:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the reading process by using reading and thinking skills and strategies to achieve their purposes in reading.

  • 3.3.c Use a wide variety of word-solving strategies and context to develop new understandings.

Standard #4: Literacy Communities:
Students will recognize the value of personal and social connection of reading, read to satisfy personal interests, and to establish, maintain and enhance personal relationships with others.

  • 3.4.d Enjoy reading and sharing ideas with others.

Mathematics

Standard #1:
Students will use mathematics to solve problems, communicate, and work with others.

  • 3.1.a apply an appropriate strategy to solve a word problem.

Standard #2:
Students will use measurement skills.

  • 3.2.b tell time to the minute.
  • 3.2.c select appropriate estimate measurement for weight of a given object using customary measurement.
  • 3.2.d use customary measurement to determine length to the nearest half inch.
  • 3.2.e determine total value of a set of coins and bills ($1.00 - $10.00)

Standard #3:
Students will use reasoning skills, mental mathematics, and estimation skills.

  • 3.3.f use mental math to add and subtract numbers.
  • 3.3.g use estimation skills to round whole numbers to the nearest tens and hundreds.

Standard #4:
Students will perform mathematical operations and seerelationships among numbers.

  • 3.4.h add 4-digit problems with regrouping.
  • 3.4.i subtract 4-digit problems with regrouping.
  • 3.4.j multiply single-digit numbers.
  • 3.4k divide a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number without a remainder
  • 3.4.l using place value, put a group of numbers through hundred- thousands in order from least to greatest.
    3.4.m be able to identify and write a fraction within a whole.

Standard #5:
Students will demonstrate a development of spatial sense.

  • 3.5.n name angles and lines.

Standard #6:
Students will collect and analyze data.

  • 3.6.o analyze a bar graph.

Standard #7:
Students will use patterns and relationships to solve problems.

  • 3.7.p extend a given number pattern.

Science

Standard #1:
Students will understand major concepts in earth science and how these apply to society.

  • 3.1.a know the characteristics of a rain forest (location, climate, layers, etc.).
  • 3.1.b compare the moon and the earth.
  • 3.1.c identify the 8 phases of the moon.
  • 3.1.d name the 9 planets in our solar system.

Standard #2:
Students will understand major concepts in life science and how these apply to society.

  • 3.2.e draw a picture of a food web in a rain forest.

Standard #3:
Students will understand major concepts in physical science and how these apply to society.

  • 3.3.f understand the forces of magnets: attract and repel.
  • 3.3.g know the components of a complete circuit.

Standard #4:
Students will use scientific inquiry processes (e.g. questioning, observing, predicting, experimenting, controlling variables, concluding) to understand the natural world.

  • 3.4.h use the skill of concluding to deduce information.

Standard #5:
Students will recognize the inter-relationships among the earth, life, and physical sciences and their effect on the environment.

  • 3.5.i understand the movement of the sun, moon, and earth.
  • 3.5.j understand how the rain forest benefits the entire earth (system dependency).

Standard #6:
Students will know the needs, functions, and systems of the human body, as it develops into an adult.

  • 3.6.k identify the 6 parts of the food pyramid.
  • 3.6.l identify the major parts of the digestive system.

Social Studies

Standard #1:
The student will use maps, charts, graphs and timelines.

  • 3-4.1.a Creates a map that includes a key, symbols and a compass rose.

Standard #2:
The student will demonstrate research skills.

  • 3-4.2.b Use multiple resource materials (i.e., encyclopedia, atlas, almanac, computers, etc.) to obtain information.
  • 3-4.2.c Summarize information from a variety of sources.

Standard #3:
The student will demonstrate cultural awareness.

  • 3-4.3.d Describes the benefits of living in a particular culture.

Standard #4:
The student will demonstrate a geographic perspective.

  • 3-4.4.e Describe two or more geographic aspects of an area.
  • 3-4.4.f Describe the basic needs and lifestyles of the people living in a specific geographic area.

Standard #5:
The student will demonstrate participatory citizenship.

  • 3-4.5.g Describe the steps involved in preparing for and participating in a community service project.

Standard #6:
The student will demonstrate an awareness of democracy.

  • 3-4.6.h. Describe how a person or group contributed to democracy.

Standard #7:
The student will demonstrate economic awareness.

  • 3-4.7.i Describe how the economy of an area impacts the lives of the people residing there.

Standard #8:
The student will demonstrate historical thinking.

  • 3-4.8.j Give examples of past events which have impacted
    contemporary life.

General Music

Standard #1:
Students will perform music alone and with others.

  • 1.a. Students will perform in canon with the class and alone on a part.

Standard #2:
Students will read and write music.

  • 2.b. Students will read and perform from staff notation an extended pentatonic song that includes the tiri, tiri rhythm.

Standard #3:
Students will listen and respond to a varied repertoire of music.

  • 3.c. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the musical elements as related to the story from program music.

Standard #4:
Students will describe music as it relates to history, culture, and diversity.

  • 4.d. Students will describe and identify characteristics of Australian folk instruments.

Visual Arts

Standard #1: Aesthetic Perception:
To inquire into the nature, beauty, and experiences of art through sensory perception.

  • 3.1.a. The student will communicate his/her ideas about art and the surrounding world.

Standard #2: Art Criticism:
To observe, reflect, and understand the characteristics and significance of one's own artwork and the artwork of others.

  • 3.2.b. The student will describe ideas or feelings connected with the viewing or making of art.

Standard #3: Art History:
To acquire knowledge of historical and cultural development through varying aesthetic points of view.

  • 3.3.c. The student will compare characteristics of art works in various eras and cultures

Standard #4: Art Production:
To create and express ideas through a variety of media, techniques, and processes.

  • 3.4.d. The student will use a variety of media, techniques and processes to express meaning through art.

World Languages

Standard #1: Communication:
Students understand and interpret spoken and written communication in the target language on a variety of topics.

Standard #2: Cultures:
Students will demonstrate an awareness of the cultures of the target languages.

Standard #3: Connections:
Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the target language.

Standard #4: Comparisons:
Students will develop insight into their own language and culture through the study of the target language and culture.

Writing

Standard #1:
Students engage in the writing process: All students will plan, write and revise while identifying personal strengths and weaknesses in writing.

  • 3.1.a. Students will brainstorm, draft, revise, and edit a descriptive or narrative piece of writing.
  • 3.1.b. Students will demonstrate and apply conventions of English. They will transfer conventions including spelling, punctuation, capitalization and usage in their writing.

Standard #2:
Students write for a variety of purposes and audiences: All students will demonstrate an understanding of purpose and audience in their writing.

  • 3.2.c. Students will gather and organize information. They will utilize compare/contrast and Venn diagrams to inform and explain in fall and spring semesters (Expository genre)
  • 3.2.d. Students will write pieces in three genre. (Descriptive, narrative, persuasive.)
