Reading

Standard #1: Reading for Information:
Students will read and understand informational materials, describe characteristics of informational text and use facts, ideas and perspectives in developing concepts.

  • 2.1.a Identify specific items of information.

Standard #2: Reading Literature:
Students will read and understand a variety of classic and contemporary literature representing diverse historical and cultural perspectives to build an understanding of themselves and others, their environment and the world.

  • 2.2.b Distinguish genres of literature and understand their
    purposes.

Standard #3: Process of Reading:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the reading process by using reading and thinking skills and strategies to achieve their purposes in reading.

  • 2.3.c Apply and integrate reading strategies efficiently and
    flexibility.

Standard #4: Literacy Communities:
Students will recognize the value of personal and social connection of reading, read to satisfy personal interests, and to establish, maintain and enhance personal relationships with others.

  • 2.4.d Enjoy reading and sharing ideas with others.

Mathematics

Standard #1:    
Students will use mathematics to solve problems, communicate, and work with others.

  • 2.1.a   use addition or subtraction to solve word problems.
  • 2.1.b   draw or use a picture to solve word problems.

Standard #2:    
Students will use measurement skills.

  • 2.2.c    tell time to the nearest 5 minutes.
  • 2.2.d   recognize and count groups of coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters) up to 99¢.

Standard #3:    
Students will use reasoning skills, mental mathematics, and estimation skills.

  • 2.3.e   use reasoning skills to solve a problem.

Standard #4:    
Students will perform mathematical operations and see relationships among numbers.

  • 2.4.f     solve addition facts to 18.
  • 2.4.g   solve subtraction facts to 18.
  • 2.4.h    solve 2-digit addition with trading in the 1s place.
  • 2.4.i     solve 2-digit subtraction with trading in the 1s place.

Standard #5:    
Students will demonstrate a development of spatial sense.

  • 2.5.j    correctly draw various plane shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle).

Standard #6:    
Students will collect and analyze data.

  • 2.6.k    gather and organize information to construct a graph (picture, pie, bar) to solve a problem.
  • 2.6.l     analyze graphs and tables in order to solve a problem.

Standard #7:    
Students will use patterns and relationships to solve problems.

  • 2.7.m  identify the numeral in the ones, tens, hundreds place.
  • 2.7.n    skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s.

Science

Standard #1:
Students will understand major concepts in earth science and how these apply to society.

  • 2.1.a describe the weather using weather terminology (e.g. precipitation, sun, temperature, clouds, wind).
  • 2.1.b tell how the weather affects people.
  • 2.1.c demonstrate that air has matter and can move things.

Standard #2:
Students will understand major concepts in life science and how these apply to society.

  • 2.2.d label the 4 parts of a plant.
  • 2.2.e tell what plants need to grow and live.

Standard #3:
Students will understand major concepts in physical science and how these apply to society.

  • 2.3.f tell that a balanced object is stable.
  • 2.3.g demonstrate a shape and balance it.

Standard #4:
Students will use scientific inquiry processes (e.g. questioning, observing, predicting, experimenting, controlling variables, concluding) to understand the natural world.

  • 2.4.h observe and describe weather.
  • 2.4.i experiment to create a stable object and find a solution to balance the object.

Standard #5:
Students will recognize the inter-relationships among the earth, life, and physical sciences and their effect on the environment.

  • 2.5.j name 2 different ways people use plants.
  • 2.5.k tell why we need to take care of our oceans.

Standard #6:
Students will know the needs, functions, and systems of the human body, as it develops into an adult.

  • 2.6.l understand that germs cause illness.
  • 2.6.m list ways to prevent the spread of germs.

Social Studies

Standard #1:
The student will use maps, charts, graphs and timelines.

  • 1-2.1.a Identify the seven continents, four oceans and NSEW on a map.
  • 1-2.1.b Identify the Equator and the three countries of North
    America on a world map.

Standard #2:
The student will demonstrate research skills.

  • 1-2.2.c Demonstrates where information on a topic may be located.
  • 1-2.2.d Use one resource to obtain information on a topic.
  • 1-2.2.e Share the information .

Standard #3:
The student will demonstrate cultural awareness.

  • 1-2.3.f Describe similarities and differences between him/herself
    and others.
  • 1-2.3.g Describe customs or lifestyles in another culture.

Standard #4:
The student will demonstrate a geographic perspective.

  • 1-2.4.h Identify one or two geographic aspects of an area.
  • 1-2.4.i Identify one or two of the natural resources in a
    geographic area.

Standard #5:
The student will demonstrate participatory citizenship.

  • 1-2.5.j Describe a positive choice at school.
  • 1-2.5.k Be involved in a role that demonstrates citizenship at
    school.

Standard #6:
The student is developing an awareness of democracy.

  • 1-2.6.l Demonstrate an awareness of some of the rights of
    people living in a democracy. (i.e. voting, free speech, etc.).

Standard #7:
The student will demonstrate economic awareness.

  • 1-2.7.m Give examples of needs and wants.

Standard #8:
The student will demonstrate historical thinking.

  • 1-2.8.n Differentiate between events from the past and the present.

General Music

Standard #1:
Students will perform music alone and with others.

  • 1.a. Students will sing/play melodic ostinatos with class and alone.

Standard #2:
Students will read and write music.

  • 2.b. Students will read and perform from staff notation a DRMSL song that includes half notes.

Standard #3:
Students will listen and respond to a varied repertoire of music.

  • 3.c. Students will identify the sections of the Rondo form.

Standard #4:
Students will describe music as it relates to history, culture, and diversity.

  • 4.d. Students will demonstrate an appropriate understanding of the style of Japanese music.

Visual Arts

Standard #1: Aesthetic Perception:
To inquire into the nature, beauty, and experiences of art through sensory perception.

  • 2.1.a. The student will communicate his/her ideas about art and the surrounding world.

Standard #2: Art Criticism:
To observe, reflect, and understand the characteristics and significance of one's own artwork and the artwork of others.

  • 2.2.b. The student will describe ideas or feelings connected with the viewing or making of art.

Standard #3: Art History:
To acquire knowledge of historical and cultural development through varying aesthetic points of view.

  • 2.3.c. The student will compare characteristics of art works in various eras and cultures

Standard #4: Art Production:
To create and express ideas through a variety of media, techniques, and processes.

  • 2.4.d. The student will use a variety of media, techniques and processes to express meaning through art.

World Languages

Standard #1: Communication:
Students understand and interpret spoken and written communication in the target language on a variety of topics.

Standard #2: Cultures:
Students will demonstrate an awareness of the cultures of the target languages.

Standard #3: Connections:
Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the target language.

Standard #4: Comparisons:
Students will develop insight into their own language and culture through the study of the target language and culture.

Standard #5: Communities:
Students will participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.

Writing

Standard #1:
Students engage in the writing process: All students will plan, write and revise while identifying personal strengths and weaknesses in writing.

  • 2.1.a. Students will plan, write, illustrate, peer edit and revise their work.
  • 2.1.b . Students will demonstrate and apply conventions of English, including basic punctuation, capitalized and usage in their writing.

Standard #2:
Students write for a variety of purposes and audiences: All students will demonstrate an understanding of purpose and audience in their writing.

  • 2.2.c. Students gather and organize information. They will demonstrate an understanding of sequencing in fall and spring semester (Expository genre)
  • 2.2.d. Students will draw and write pieces in two genre (narrative, descriptive.)
