9th Grade Curriculum Overview

All Valley Southwoods students must register for a minimum of five full credit courses plus physical education each semester.  In addition to the required classes described below, students must register for at least one elective each semester.  Fees are determined by the Board of Education and will be listed on fee statements at the time of Fall Registration.

Required courses:
  • General Science or Biology
  • Language and Literature or Accelerated Language and Literature
  • Mathematics (Basic Math 9, Algebra A, Algebra B, Geometry)
  • Physical Education
  • Geographical Cultural Studies (2 semesters) or Accelerated Geographical Cultural Studies (1 semester) and Ancient Western Civilization (1 semester)

Elective courses:  Students are required to register for at least one elective class each semester.  If a student wishes, he/she may take up to three electives each semester.  Southwoods has an eight period day.  Each period a student is not in an elective class, he/she will be assigned to a study hall.  Electives include:

  • Business (Keyboarding I)
  • Family and Consumer Science (Consumer Technology)
  • Fine Arts (Photographic Foundations, Three-Dimensional Foundations, Two-Dimensional Foundations)
  • Band – Ninth Grade
  • Vocal Music (Bass Clef Chorus, Treble Clef Chorus, Southwoods Singers)
  • Orchestra – Ninth Grade
  • Language Arts (Debate I/Public Speaking, Speech/Composition, Theatrics)
  • Technology Education
  • World Languages (French I & II, German I, Japanese I, Latin I, Spanish I & II)

Special programs/electives.  Nine are offered at Valley Southwoods to help meet individual needs of students.
