Pros & Cons Regarding New Construction
Teachers Input – October 29, 2003

A:

Pros
Resource together
Nice main area for student council
Natural light
Media Center making as L shape wrap around gym area
Administration location

Cons
BD on 2nd Floor
At risk is not close enough to bus ed & lang arts (reading)
Classroom sizes?
Whoa! B.D. room is isolated from other Sp. Ed.  We need to be near other rooms for collaboration & support.
Need a place for Welcome Center & translators
Where is the radio tower?
Wrestling Room?
Business lab need more are if they are lab/lecture
World Language needs to be together around the lab. We will use it more and it will be used more as a classroom.  Collaboration is better together. First floor is better to bring in props and visuals.

B:

Pros
World Language – all rooms are together (around LAB good)
B.D. could be near V.P.’s that’d be great
Student Council near B.D. Room (good for sponsor)
Natural light – yea!

Cons
Scattered special ed – needs to be together
Not social studies on 2 floors
No access at night for art
Lockers
Whoa! B.D. definitely needs to be near other Sp. Ed. room for collaboration, often our kids need help in hallway conduct and it’d be much easier for them to walk down a short hall vs around school.  But best one I’ve seen out of 3 so far
ESL Welcome Center & translators need a place to work – parents come in and need access
Switch World Language and Language Arts to provide (2nd to 1st) access for ESL newcomers, parents etc.

C:

Pros
“Cool” media center
Love the stage
2nd floor greenhouse – good
Rooms 301,302,303 have very new lab counters and cabinets. They do no need to be replaced.
Cover for entry ways – like a car port out 25’ or so
Cover are around forum for students to walk to dining area
I like this one. Media Center sections make sense – central hall is nicely organized. S.E. seems to be organized to best serve both S.E. students & staff

Cons
At-risk needs to be close to the Reading Teacher
Lunch room needs to be larger
Translators need a space to work & meet with newcomer families
Be sure to have access to greenhouse for disabled students if it is on the upper level.  Lift for wheelchair on stairs.
Lockers
Would rather have computer room than courtroom/town hall around social studies
Faculty restrooms in T.A.’s
Social Studies has to have computers/lab available to classes. Combine with courtroom/town hall

D:

Pros
Like Media Center on main floor
Will need fixed labs
Which rooms will be media rich rooms
World Language – does not matter as long as we’re near each other
Sci & B.D. in same area – that’s good. (A.J.’s favorite so far)

Cons
Be cautious of too much glass
It is difficult to get quality video
Perhaps blind
Shrink T.A.
More portable labs for TA space
World Language did not like straight line
Social Studies would not use the town hall
Social Studies would not like to use two floors
Art prefers to be wrapped around – kids constantly move from room to room
Health office in center of building and accessible to students quickly – need space for 5 cots, private office, handicap restroom, refrigerator
Concern – insulation in rooms. 407A and 407B is hot or cold. Windows leak when it rains.

E:

Pros
Keep the same science rooms – good
FCS – 4 classrooms – yes
Language arts meeting rooms for clubs near an entry. Many students are here for debate, mock trial, radio in the evenings
Like location of Health office – close to elevators and PE
I believe all areas have access to computer lab

Cons
Bus Ed and At-risk need to be closer
Media Center way too small
Whoa! B.D. rooms need to be next to other sp ed rooms for collaboration and support.
Translators and Welcome center need to be available to public. Translators need a place to work
Room 320 – needs a new lab or resurfacing (counter tops & cupboards) for FCS – Plumbing is falling apart – very old.
PFL – room in ICS needs to be larger
Multi Media room doesn’t fit with Bus Ed
Art will not work in that space – no support areas
FCS needs to be by the door for grocery delivery
Sp Ed – on three different floors, BD far away from office – Wheelchair access?
World Language rooms separated from lab and each other.
World Language 2nd and 3rd floors would be difficult to bring in our props and visuals. We need to be together around the lab to use it more effectively.  Very important to be together around the lab
Radio Tower – must be moved
Science needs it’s own computer lab since all other labs are in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor
AP Studio students PM access
Turn town hall/courtroom into computer lab – use computer labs more throughout the year
World Language split

Program Ideas from Students (October 24, 2003)

Maybe department by color
Maybe remodel science labs one section at a time
Orchestra – piano keyboard lab
Lockers - compartments

Ideas from Site Improvement Team - October 22, 2003

Special Education

  • Resource dispersed throughout (but need for proximity to each other)
  • SCI Together
  • Private area for IEP meetings
  • Severe/profound
  • MD by bus

Technology

  • Outside access   If south – 3 bays
  • CAD lab – move to old photo lab – space is critical
  • Shared classroom – for example use auto as lab then another shared classroom

Language Arts

  • Stay together – resources together, collaboration
  • Keep same number of computer stations at least
  • Common area needs computer stations
  • Black Box theater, drama, meeting place for staff, adjacent to Video production, includes ICS
  • Maybe stack
  • Priority – individual work stations – computers

Science

  • Bigger rooms – renovate 200’s
  • Access to computer programs
  • Need common computer space
  • Re-location during construction

Technology

  • Wireless completely
  • Issue to all students
  • No need to schedule 1 lab
  • Printers in common area of C’s
  • PDA’s

Music

  • Better proximity to each other
  • But orchestra and vocal like proximity to auditorium
  • If new auditorium on southwest, move orchestra and vocal to area now band hall
  • Lockers need to accept laptops
  • Needs 16 stations in AP Theory to do composition
  • Multi media presentation materials for all students
  • Safety in auditorium/stage area – system lowering lights needs to be brought up to more than just fire code
  • Secure catwalks

Math

  • Stay together for communication purposes
  • Central location for resource – need exact location
  • Combo Resource/office

Media – Jim

  • Keep size
  • Top floor: 3 areas (leisure, research, computers)
  • Include other project rooms
  • Keep materials in media center
  • Central location if not 3rd floor
  • Make accessible to community

Pursue business partnerships. Guidance
Recommend:  speaker over lunch for future technology.  Kathy seek name.
Consider wireless DMACC
Natural lighting for all
Social Studies
Feedback from staff location of administration, counseling, nurse
Nice to have administration in building rather than LRC
Student:  likes departments to stay together
Consider childcare
Concern:  kids roaming in hallways

Comments on New Construction
  • More TA in old area
  • No admin where math rooms are (2nd entry)
  • Math closer together
  • Radio Tower ??  Mid Tiger Park
  • More shelving/storage in science
  • Any reason art has to be up against fieldhouse.  Are ceiling higher there? Would rather be in Fat C.
  • Social Studies/Art not on same floor so no fighting for C space
  • Square footage should not be less just to create open space.
  • Art ½ space but still use it (re: Fat C)
  • 2 floors LA (not 3)
  • Stage in Fact C of LA
  • Media Center (one-floor)
  • Social Studies would like to be on one floor
  • 1st floor social studies – west 2/3
  • 9 rooms – media center –east side
  • 13 rooms social studies
  • Computer lab in middle of Fat C
  • S.E. – S.S. Resource – “read tests” room
  • TA – over by stairway
  • Traffic concerns about 1st floor media center/admin. Hall area – middle
  • Move “Bus Ed Cochran’s room” to create a walk way
  • S.S. rooms – decrease comp. Lab space and add to classroom space , 1-2 feet all the way around
  • Add hallway space around the perimeter top – math science
  • Media Center – should only be on bottom floor.  Ames had 2nd floor and it fell
  • Liked Sp Ed in close proximity to each other
  • Nice to have a couple Sp Ed spread elsewhere
  • Insulation is non-existent & windows lead (Sp Ed)
  • S.S. – Govt, US and Econ work together. They are concerned that they will not be in proximity to one another.
  • Concern regarding the use of porch – make US History reference available and use space for resource
  • Traveling teachers – do all teachers have a room?  Where do traveling teachers put their stuff
  • Science – work space for teachers – computer lab space
  • Could Bus Ed go to 2nd floor, S.S. down to 1st
  • Classes use media center most should be closest
  • Tech Ed – 3 bays on South – pave the grassy space to rotate vehicles, clay storage? – wood supplies, how will they get inside?
  • At-Risk – isolated feeling; difficult for Bus Ed/LA Teachers to travel from place to place.  Will Mindy & Michele travel and keep teaching business?
  • If only 1 floor media center – isn’t LA along way away?
  • Social Studies decrease porch size and increase class size – make 1 ft larger than World Language now, windows for passive supervision – worried about being able to have enough darkness for computer projects. Blinds are necessary for the windows
  • Bus Ed – has to be large enough for labs – Labs could be out on the porch area. At-Risk needs to be close to the departments it works with and more centrally located (LA)
  • Science – can keep some lab counters 301,302,303.  336 need to expand in to driver’s ed – old science office 304 becomes a classgreen
