A great deal of work has taken place over the Winter Break.
Most of the concrete work in the dock area has now been completed.
One challenge has been the tie-in of the new sanitary sewer
with the main line in 35th Street. Conflicts between the
proposed bore under 35th Street and existing utilities that
are in unexpected locations have caused some difficulty.
The rerouting of a gas line to accomplish this should be
complete on Friday, December 31, thus freeing up things to
make the connection, which will then allow the balance of
the sanitary sewer line to be placed back to the existing
building. Block work continues on the new Chiller Room/Auto
Repair Shop with the east wall nearly complete and several
of the interior walls in process. Under floor plumbing in
the Boiler Room is virtually complete and pads for the boilers
have been poured. All joist reinforcement in the existing
Metal and Wood Working Shops has been completed except for
a couple of small areas and are expected to be complete yet
this week. Block work is underway on the electrical room
expansion at the north end. Walls and lid have been poured
for the tunnel connection and extension north of the existing
Mechanical Room. Removal of the underground tanks is scheduled
to start next week. Much plumbing, mechanical and electrical
work involved in prepping areas for future tie-ins is being
done while certain areas of the building can be taken offline
for short periods over the Winter Break.
Block work is underway on the new building. The block that
had been laid on Friday, December 9 was blown over by strong
winds on the weekend, so cleanup and reconstruction of that
portion has been underway this week. Conduit for the main
electrical lines has been run up to the building. Much of
the work in the dock area has been completed with some paving
that needs to be completed. The walls have been poured on
the new connection to the tunnel on the north side of the
existing mechanical room. All the under floor plumbing in
the existing auto shop, which is now going to be repurposed
as a mechanical room, and plumbing and valves for connection
to the new boilers are in process. Removal of the underground
fuel oil storage tanks is scheduled to commence the week
of January 3. Also, the new sanitary sewer line from the
new building to the connection at 35th Street is scheduled
to be installed over Winter Break, so as to minimize interference
with parking and traffic flows in the parking lot. New water
service is scheduled to be switched over this weekend (12/18).
Work continues on the underground water line installation
as they now cut across the existing parking lot. It is expected
that work will be complete very soon. The new sanitary sewer
still needs to be installed and that work will commence in
the next couple weeks. Most of the work around the dock and
recycling area has been completed and repaving will happen
there in the next few days, as weather permits. Joist reinforcement
continues as rooms are available during non-class times.
Electrical and plumbing upgrades are occurring in the existing
tunnels. Most of the underground in the existing auto shop
has been completed. New vault walls have been formed and
are expected to be poured next week.
Work continues on the new water line
that is now stubbed into the mechanical room and connection
at 35th Street has
been made. Filling in the gaps of the water line is underway,
with the schedule to cut through the parking lot next week
and connect it to the building by week’s end. The storm
sewer is in. Installation of the sanitary sewer is scheduled
to follow completion of the water lines. The majority of
the underground plumbing in the new chiller room and shop
has been completed and work is scheduled to start on laying
block next week. Work continues in the dock and dumpster
area, with most of the walls now poured. Repaving of a portion
of that area should take place next week. Underground plumbing
work in the existing building that will also be part of the
chiller room has mostly been installed. Work continues on
the joist reinforcing. Engineers are still finalizing some
issues with regard to the shoring for the building so that
the underground tanks can be removed. It is hopeful that
the tanks can actually be removed sometime this month.
