| Heavy rains over the weekend
and first part of this week have slowed site work. Another
section of sidewalk in front of the building was poured on
May 27. The finish grading work and top soil prep has begun
with hopes of seeding a good portion of the south side of
the building yet this week. The area along Eighth Street,
between Hillside and Walnut Creek, has been seeded. Playground
installation continues as soil conditions permit. Taping and
floating continues in the east wing. East wing corridors have
been primed for painting, as have some of the masonry walls.
MDF board is virtually complete on the first floor and is
still underway on the second floor of the east wing. All lockers
have now been set. Floor tile is being placed in the first
floor restroom in the east wing. Still a few drops remain
to be placed for the sprinkler contractor. Electrical and
plumbing work continues on pace. Prime painting is nearly
complete in the west wing and has started in the gym. Much
of the ceiling grid for the west wing has been set and some
light fixtures installed. A few windows and storefront areas
are yet to be completed. The administrative area has been
primed to paint. Some sidewalk remains to be poured at the
main entrance. Much of the millwork has been set for the west
wing. Plumbers will start installing sinks in the near future.
While the permanent air conditioning units are not all operational,
a temporary air conditioning unit has been installed to help
control the humidity throughout the building to allow painting
and sheet rock operations to continue.
Site work and finish grading
is proceeding as weather permits. Barring further wet weather,
it is expected that the south portion of the site, the area
along Eighth Street, and the area between the parking lot
and school will be seeded this weekend. Work continues on
playground equipment and installing concrete play areas. Most
of the sidewalks have been installed with the exception of
the main entrance. Grading is underway in that area. Window
and door installation is close to completion. Areas that could
lead to water penetration have been sealed off so that all
other trades can continue to work. The majority of the sheetrock
has now been installed and taping and floating has at least
one coat completed on the first floor, with that work now
starting on the second floor. The majority of the ceiling
grid for the west wing has been installed and is now being
installed in selected areas of the center wing. Most of the
MDF board for the first floor of the east wing has been installed
and is underway on the second floor. Installation of lights
in classrooms has started in the west wing, as has the installation
of millwork. The lockers for the first floor east wing have
been assembled and are set in place and that work is also
well underway on the second floor of the east wing. A good
share of the finish painting in the west wing is complete
and prime painting in certain areas on the first floor of
the east wing (primarily the corridor) is underway. Grouting
of the ceramic tile is being finished in the west wing and
tile work in the east wing should start next week. Wiring
for technology in the west wing is nearly complete and is
underway in both the center wing and east wing of the building.
The sprinkler company is finishing drops in selected areas
around the school and is nearing completion of this work.
Fireplace has now been set in the hearth room. Prime painting
has started in the gymnasium. Work continues on the installation
of the mechanical and electrical equipment.
The strike has now ended. It affected
some contractors, but not all and it did allow the glazers
to get some more windows and doors in place. There are still
a few isolated areas on the exterior where the appropriate
glass has not been installed. However, those areas are being
plugged with plywood and waterproofed to allow the continuation
of finish work on the interior. As weather has allowed, finish
grading has started with the intent being to seed as soon
as possible and not miss the spring seeding window. The majority
of the sidewalks (except those next to the building) have
now been poured and work is underway on installing playground
equipment and the site work associated with that equipment.
Finish painting is well underway in the west wing and the
ceiling grid has started to be installed in that area. Most
of the sheet rock has been hung in the center wing and taping
and floating in those areas is well underway. In the east
wing, while the corridors have drywall that has been floated
and taped, the addition of windows is now allowing the drywall
operations to be concentrated on this wing with tapers and
floaters to follow. The MDF board is also now being installed
in the upper floors of the east wing. Now that the building
has permanent power, the elevator work will start soon. There
is still some sprinkler work to do in the east wing. Technology
cabling is being run in the west wing.
The strike that started on May 1 continues.
However, all of the contractors are not union and some of
the work is being done this week. Additional sidewalks have
been poured and windows and doorways installed. At present,
most of the 2nd floor windows for the classrooms have been
installed, with only a few remaining. Work is also underway
on the storefront at the dining room and several of the entrances
now have doors and windows in place. Starting May 7, a third
gate has been created for access to the jobsite for union
contractors who have already settled on their contract, thus
we are hopeful in getting black dirt spread and graded so
that the site can be seeded during this prime seeding time.
Permanent power has now been connected to the building. The
playground equipment has been delivered and work is underway
on preparing the playground areas. Now that a majority of
the windows are in place, this should allow for an expanded
crew to finish installing drywall and MDF board as soon as
the strike is over.
