SUMMER ADVENTURES IN LEARNING (SAIL)

For students completing grades K-6

SAIL offers both academic refresher and enrichment classes.

Academic Refresher Courses are for students wanting to review the concepts and content of their current grade level.

Enrichment Courses (Arts and Academic) are for students seeking to extend their knowledge beyond the regular academic curriculum, including art and science.

Kindergarten

MEGA MATH
Students will review kindergarten math concepts and prepare for first grade. Enjoy songs, games, and books to learn numeration, operations, patterns, and geometry in many hands-on activities. (Miller)

ADVENTURES IN KINDERGARTEN
Students will review kindergarten reading, handwriting and math concepts through hands-on activities and games. Note: this is a refresher/review class. (Kanis)

Grades 1

DEVELOPMENTAL MATH
Sharpen those math skills! Students will rap and jive to math tunes, they’ll create a cereal abacus and edible word problems to explore math facts and families. They’ll also practice math facts with a math mat challenge. Students will refresh first grade math skills through hands-on and manipulative activities, multiple sensory opportunities and real-life applications. (Brase,C)

READING SUCCESS
For students needing additional help developing reading strategies. During class we will be reviewing reading strategies covered during the first grade year, giving your child the opportunity to strengthen and reinforce skills to be prepared for next year! We will be working in reading centers, reading books, discussing and writing about the books, building words, using poetry, and working with word families. Plan on lots of hands-on activities as we work with these concepts! (Brase)

Grades 2

DEVELOPMENTAL MATH
Review material covered during the school year, reinforcing strengths and concentrating on problem areas. This course is for students who need extra help understanding second grade math concepts. (Pals)

READING ADVENTURES
The instructor will read favorite stories to the class to model reading comprehension strategies through Read Alouds. The strategies discussed include making connections, questioning, taking notes, and using graphic organizers. A fun project or craft will be done for each book. (Pals)

Grades 3 & 4

READING STRATEGIES
Learn new and fun strategies to read content, solve reading problems and improve writing skills. Students will work on fiction, non-fiction, reader’s theater, choral reading and guided reading activities. (Altenhofen)

DEVELOPMENTAL MATH
Sharpen your math skills! Students will explore number properties with sports cards and practice math facts playing games with double dice, 10-sided double dice and a game called “Race Against Myself.” Strengthen problem-solving by doing mental math challenges. Children will be given opportunities to refresh third and fourth grade math skills through real-life applications, multiple sensory opportunities, team problem-solving and other games. (Brase)

WRITING STRATEGIES
Review strategies and techniques to solve writing problems and become a more successful writer. Students will work on journaling, peer writing, personal reflections and descriptive paragraphs. (Nelson, K.)

DEVELOPMENTAL MATH
Review of computation and problem-solving skills. Includes addition, subtraction, multiplication and some division strategies. (Anderson)

READING/WRITING STRATEGIES
Learn new strategies to read content fluently, solve reading problems and improve reading skills. Students will work on vocabulary, making predictions, identifying the main components of a story, reading for meaning, making connections and retelling. Review strategies and techniques to help solve problems and become better writers. Learn the writing process of brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Writing concepts, including ideas, organization, voice, word choice, conventions and sentence fluency, will be reviewed through narrative, expository, book reviews and other writing genres. COMPUTER ADVENTURES

SUPER DUPER SCIENCE
Explore the world of science in fun and exciting ways that just might get messy! Students will work with “gack” and experiment with mixing primary colors. They will make predictions, will it float or sink? Various bugs will be classified and sorted. (Kanis)

FUN IN THE SUN
Explore the summer season through experiments with water and more. Through hands-on experiments we will promote problem solving skills while working together and having fun. Students will use a variety of diverse materials to make creative projects to share at home. (Miller)

AFTERNOON SAIL CAMP

For students completing grades K-6

Students have the opportunity to extend their SAIL experience to the afternoons! There will be a variety of fun activities including arts and crafts, enrichment opportunities, reading, games, and recreation. Students need to bring their own lunch (no refrigeration available) and a snack will be provided in the afternoon. A variety of themes will be incorporated throughout the two-week period with some help from the students!

Registration
Information
Some programs have different registration procedures. Please read each program's instructions carefully and call 633-5001 with any questions.

Pre-registration and pre-payment required! Please complete a separate registration form for each child. Family or group registrations are NOT accepted on the same form.

Payment Options
Personal checks, MasterCard, VISA and cash are all accepted. If paying in cash, you must pay in person at the Community Education office during office hours.

Scholarships
Funds, based on financial need, are available to assist WDMCSD students with tuition for most classes. Priority is given to those taking refresher courses. Students must live within WDMCSD boundaries. Call (515) 633-5001 for details.

Refunds
An $8 charge is deducted from all refunds, except classes cancelled by Community Education and those listed below. Refund requests must be made before the second class session.

Photo Release
If you prefer that your child is not photographed during summer programs, check the appropriate box on the registration form. These photographs may be used in Community Education and district publications and the website, as well as in the local media and newspapers. When photos are used on the website, the child’s name WILL NOT be included.
