Community Education offers a wide variety of summer programs that can make this summer fun AND educational. Whether your child wants a little boost in reading, writing or math or a fun way to expand their knowledge in several subjects, these summer programs provide it all. There are exciting learning and growing opportunities for students of all ages.

Below is a list of programs available to students this summer. Find a program that interests your child and sign-up today!

Summer Adventures In Learning (SAIL)

Students completing grades K-6

SAIL offers refresher classes in reading, writing, math and study skills, as well as enrichment opportunities including chess, computers, art, science and more. Students can also register for the Afternoon SAIL Camp.

Jump Start

Students completing grades K-5

Jump Start provides a mix of refresher and enrichment learning experiences. Students can also register for the Extended Day morning and afternoon program, so parents can drop off and pick up children before and after work.

Small Group Tutoring

Students completing grades 1-4

Students receive help in math and reading and work with a teacher in a small group setting.

Sneak Peek

Students entering Kindergarten this fall

This morning program gives children a peek at the kindergarten experience. During these week-long sessions, the children will experience the activities and daily routines of kindergarten life.

Safety Town

Students entering Kindergarten this fall

Safety Town introduces comprehensive safety awareness and preventive procedures to children entering kindergarten this fall. These soon-to-be kindergartners will learn to safely cross the street and get on the bus. Each session also includes a visit to the West Des Moines Fire and Police Departments.

Music Programs

Grade level varies

Band Bash helps students develop important skills needed for joining their school band. They can choose from private and group lessons, as well as rehearsal band.

Super Summer Strings offers both private instrumental lessons and lessons in an orchestra setting.

Youth Tech Inc.

Suggested Ages 10-17

Youth Tech Inc. is an interactive computer camp that focuses on providing enrichment opportunities to students in the world of computers. With a caring environment at the core of camp values, Youth Tech strives to create a positive learning community that encourages creativity, fun and academic excellence.

Cool Science Sorry this class is FULL!

Students completing grades 3-5

Join us for this exciting enrichment class that will revolve around using stimulating, hands-on, inquiry-based investigations to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Some topics to be covered include: chemistry, electricity, microscopes, food webs, astronomy, weather, water testing, wetlands and prairies.

Chinese Camp

Students currently enrolled in grades 6,7 and 8

The 2009 Summer Chinese Camp “Bridges to China” is a 3-week program that will allow students currently enrolled in grades 6, 7, and 8 to develop an introductory knowledge of the Chinese language through activities, games, and celebrations.  Chinese Camp will be held from 8:00am-11:50am Monday through Friday, June 8-June 26, at Stilwell Junior High School.  Students will work with Chinese cartoons as a resource focusing on Family, School, and a Trip in China.  Listening & speaking and writing & reading will be included in each day’s events to make learning more effective and fun.  Trained peer mentors from the Chinese community and Chinese language students from the West Des Moines school district will work with students in groups to ensure each child’s success and fun in Chinese camp.  Cultural activities will include Taiji Quan and Chinese Wushu/Kungfu (martial arts), Chinese food, Tea Ceremony, calligraphy and music.

Volunteer Opportunities

Students completing grade 7 and 8

SAIL & Sneak Peek need volunteers to help serve as classroom helpers. The programs offer a wide range of recreational and educational activities, Monday through Friday, at various times.

Planet 7

Students entering grade 7

Planet 7 is an introduction to seventh grade and is sponsored by West Des Moines Parks and Recreation, West Des Moines and Clive Police Departments and Community Education.

 

Registration
Information
Some programs have different registration procedures. Please read each program's instructions carefully and call 633-5001 with any questions.

Pre-registration and pre-payment required! Please complete a separate registration form for each child. Family or group registrations are NOT accepted on the same form.

Registration Opens
March 9 -
WDMCS District students

March 23-
Out-of-district students

Payment Options
Personal checks, MasterCard, VISA and cash are all accepted. If paying in cash, you must pay in person at the Community Education office during office hours.

Scholarships
Funds, based on financial need, are available to assist WDMCSD students with tuition for most classes. Priority is given to those taking refresher courses. Students must live within WDMCSD boundaries. Call (515) 633-5001 for details.

Refunds
An $8 charge is deducted from all refunds, except classes cancelled by Community Education and those listed below. Refund requests must be made before the second class session.

Photo Release
If you prefer that your child is not photographed during summer programs, check the appropriate box on the registration form. These photographs may be used in Community Education and district publications and the website, as well as in the local media and newspapers. When photos are used on the website, the child’s name WILL NOT be included.
