In addition to asking about strengths in
the community the Community Education Advisory Council also asked
the participants:
- What problems they see arising.
- What would make our community even better.
- Who is not being heard or served.
- What their hopes are for our community
in five to ten years.
Some previously mentioned strengths for some were
also concerns for others. Participants said there is a need for:
- More collaboration with our neighboring
cities and within our community
- Better public transportation
- Planning to avoid fragmentation and sprawl
- More facilities for recreation, youth, seniors
and cultural arts activities for unengaged youth
- Expanded Character Counts in the community
a return to strong values
Many mentioned the excessive competition to be
“the best” among adults and children and encouraged
relationship building in families and neighborhoods. Others called
for welcoming and learning about people moving into our area from
other communities and especially from other nations. Caring attention
and support also needs to be given to those with disabilities.
At risk behavior among youth – and adults
– was listed as a cause of concern. This especially includes
underage drinking and parents who serve alcohol to minors in their
homes.
All in all, there is strong commitment and a “can
do” attitude to address our challenges.
