Insects and mice
occasionally enter school buildings and necessitate some type
of pest control program. Previous programs have centered on
preventive pesticide applications. Through an effort to improve
the environmental performance of school operations, the WDMCS
has now adopted a customized
pest control process known as Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) offers
many advantages over a chemically based pest control program,
including an opportunity to minimize the potential hazard
to people, property and the environment by substantially reducing
the amount of chemical pesticide applied in WDMCS facilities.
IPM is a scientific,
environmentally sensitive approach to solving pest problems
that focuses on evaluating the cause of pest infestations.
Management practices include structural and procedural modifications
that reduce pest access, food, moisture and harborage, in
addition to a comprehensive monitoring program.
