Schools
are safe environments, but violence or any other type of emergency
and/or crisis situation can happen anytime and anywhere. Effective
and safe schools are well prepared for any potential emergency
or crisis.
An Emergency Plan and a Crisis Management Plan were developed
to assist West Des Moines Community Schools staff with preparation,
communication and education. A district task force of staff,
parents and community members meets on a yearly basis to review
the procedures of these plans. The group also discusses how
procedures have been activated during the previous year and
dialogues about topics related to district emergency preparedness
and crisis management. The following are critical steps that
guide our staff in effective emergency management.
- Assess the situation.
- Call 911 or other emergency numbers.
- Secure the building for the safety of students and staff
by following the Emergency Plan.
- Notify the Superintendent and other Learning Resource
Center personnel.
- Refer media inquiries to the Office of School/Community
Relations at (515) 633-5023.
- Notify families of the people involved.
- Mobilize the building and/or district Crisis Management
Team.
- Keep a log of all activity.
