Clive Elementary School and the West Des Moines Community School
District are creating a nature trail and outdoor classroom in a
heavily wooded plot of land behind the school.
The Gene Meier Nature Area will be on land that is owned by the
school district and is named for Gene Meier, a principal in the
school district from 1958 to 1993 and a past principal of Clive
Elementary School from 1971 to 1988.
A group of parents, educators and community leaders developed a
plan to create additional green space yet preserve the natural habitat
of the land. A curriculum is being created to use this area as an
outdoor classroom; the nature area will be available for any school
or community group as well.
The Clive School PTA will collect and keep an accounting of all
donated funds.
In an effort to create additional green space, yet preserve the
natural habitat of the land, a group of parents, educators and community
leaders developed a plan to create a community nature trail. The
old scrub trees have been removed and a mulched nature trail will
intertwine throughout the wooded area creating a quarter mile nature
trail. A bridge, constructed and paid for by the West Des Moines
Community Schools, now spans the creek, making the trail accessible
to all students and the community, and will connect to a bike path
this is currently under construction by the City of Windsor Heights.
This is your opportunity to invest in and help support the completion
of the Gene Meier Nature Area. Donations will help pay for the four
interpretive areas ($750 each), the small wetlands boardwalk ($7,700),
a large wetlands boardwalk ($18,000) and the shelter area ($20,000).
$1000 and up – Donor information will be engraved on a
commemorative plaque.
$200 to $999 – A 4 x 8 inch brick with up to three lines
of engraving, maximum of 15 characters per line. Bricks will be
placed on a walkway near the shelter house.
$50 to $199 – An honor scroll will be created at the school.
$1 to $49 – Students at Clive Elementary School will recognize
each donor with a thank-you card.
