Uniformed Officers in the Schools

FROM THE WEST DES MOINES POLICE DEPARTMENT

It’s back to school time for students of the West Des Moines Community School District.  One of the highest priorities of the West Des Moines Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment for the children and members of our community.  With that priority in mind officers of the department will be present, in uniform, at most of the schools in the West Des Moines Community School District, within the City of West Des Moines, during the first week of school and periodically throughout the year.  This uniformed presence will supplement our School Resource Officers and our Community Education and Outreach Officers that currently work in our schools.  Students, teachers, parents, and the community will see an increase in marked police cars in and around the schools and the adjacent streets beginning on Wednesday, August 20, 2014.

We would like to remind the community of the following:

  • Please slow down and obey all of the traffic laws in and around our schools.  There will be an increase in pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic when school starts.  Be aware of, and slow down, near our crosswalks.  The safety of our children as they come to school and return home is paramount!
  • Please watch for school buses, their warning lights, and stop signals.  The safety of our children as they are picked up and dropped off from the schools buses and bus stops needs to be a priority for drivers.  We need all drivers to obey all of the laws associated with schools buses so that we can prevent the tragedy of a child being struck by a vehicle.
  • Please refrain from texting while driving and any other activity that distracts your ability to safely and defensively drive your vehicles.
  • Parents, please utilize the appropriate child safety seat as you transport your children in your vehicles.  If you need any assistance with the installation, or have questions about the requirements of the law, please contact our department.  We have Child Safety Seat Technicians that are specifically trained and certified in this area and are very willing to help with installations or questions. They can be contacted at 515-222-3320.
  • We would also ask that you talk to your children and give them guidance and strategies on how to deal with stranger danger incidents.  We want to encourage the immediate reporting of all suspicious persons and acts that occur involving the children of our community.  If you need some guidance in that area, please contact the West Des Moines Police Department or seek out a teacher or staff member from the West Des Moines Community School District.  If a suspicious act is in progress please call 911 for immediate assistance.

If we all follow these guidelines our community, specifically our children, will have a safe and enjoyable school year.  If you have a non-emergency question please contact the West Des Moines Police Department at 515-222-3320.
