Did You Know the LRC is Moving?

As part of the district’s 10-year plan, the Learning Resource Center will be under construction beginning in April. The entire building will be closed to the public between April and September 2013.

However, many of the great services and programs we provide will still be available to you. LRC staff and services such as Kids West and the Instructional Materials Center (IMC) will be relocating to the former Walnut Creek Campus building (815 8th St., WDM).

  • Staff at the LRC will be moving to the temporary location the week of April 15.
  • No meetings will be scheduled in the LRC after April 10.
  • Doors will open at the temporary location April 22.
  • All phone numbers will remain the same.
  • The IMC began packing during spring break. The items packed will not be available for use until the fall. IMC hours during the relocation will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The IMC will be closed July 1-5. Equipment and services available at the temporary location are:
        • Regular lamination only (no heavy)
        • Two die cut machines
        • Limited selection of dies (summer, early fall themes)
        • Paper cutter
        • Magnet sheets
        • Construction paper, cardstock
  • On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Educaton held a public hearing on the Learning Resource Center (LRC) Renovation project. There were no participants and no objections were filed. The board then awarded the low bid of $2,310,300 for the base bid and alternates 1-3B to Woodruff Construction, LLC for the LRC project to be paid from sales and service tax funds. This bid amount came in lower than the initial estimated budget.

The West Des Moines Community Schools Learning Resource Center (LRC) built in 1994 is scheduled to be remodeled this year. The building is located at 3550 Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines and serves as the headquarters of our 9,000-student, 1,200-employee public school district.

  • Cost: The initial total budget for the renovation project is $3.36 million, which will be paid for through sales tax. According to Iowa law, these funds can only be spent on construction projects and cannot be used to pay for the general operation of the district, teachers’ salaries, or educational programing.
  • Timeline: The project will take place between April and September 2013. During this time, the staff and the services they deliver will be relocated, primarily to the district-owned building at 815 8th St., West Des Moines, IA 50265 (the former Walnut Creek Campus location).
  • Scope: The project is part of the district’s 10-year facilities plan, which was approved by the Board of Education and developed with input from staff, administrators, parents, and community members through meetings, a website survey and public forums. The renovation project includes upgrading the 18-year-old heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system, upgrading the interior lighting system, upgrading telephone and data systems, replacing the fire alarm system, providing new paint and carpeting, and improving space allocation and arrangements to better serve the students, public and district staff who enter the building.
  • LRC 411: Services provided for the district and community from this building include human resources, business and accounting, community relations, educational and curriculum services, nutrition, technology, training and meeting space, Four Oaks, phone and computer server systems,  and the Instructional Material Center. Community Education is also headquartered at the LRC , providing a wide range of programs and services for our community that include facility rental, preschool programming, Kids West child care, continuing education, Brighter Beginnings and Service Learning.
