International School Meals Day

March 6 will be the second annual International School Meals Day.  Since December 2010, the UK and US have been sharing examples of policies and practices in promoting healthy eating in schools.  With similar challenges and successes, both countries wanted to find a way to raise awareness of the importance of good nutrition amongst children and foster healthy eating habits both at home and at school.  These desires lead to International School Meals Day.  International School Meals Day helps to emphasize the connection between healthy eating, education and better learning.  The theme for this year’s International School Meals Day is “Food Stories”.  Stories relating to food are rich with tradition and culture.  Looking for a conversation starter?  Share a food story with your family.

Take Time For School Breakfast

The majority of Americans feel breakfast is important, but hectic mornings make it difficult to fit the meal in every day. In fact, 40 percent of moms say that their child does not eat breakfast daily, according to Kellogg’s Breakfast in America survey.

Numerous studies show that eating breakfast is essential to children’s ability to learn, stay healthy, focus and behave in school. March 3-7 Nutrition Services will be celebrating National School Breakfast Week.  Stop by your school cafeteria before school to have some breakfast and get ready for the day.  The breakfast menu can be found here . New items are being added to our menu. Stop by and join the fun.

On March 3, West Des Moines Nutrition Department will be acknowledging Dr. Seuss with a lunch in honor of his birthday.  Join us for One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Orange Fish and our take on Green Eggs and Ham.  Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
