School Breakfast Survey The Iowa Department of Education and the University of Iowa need your help to make school breakfast at Iowa schools the best it can be! Below is a link to an online survey that will ask you some questions about your child’s breakfast habits and preferences. The purpose of the survey is to better understand what parents like you think about the school breakfast program. Your input will be used to help the Iowa Department of Education understand why breakfast participation is so low in Iowa schools and how schools can better meet your child’s needs at breakfast! This survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Boundary Change Proposal Approved

On Monday, Dec. 8, the West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education approved changing elementary school attendance boundaries for the 2015-16 school year. The School Board voted 6-0 to approve the district administration’s proposed boundary map – Map C5 – and implementation plan.

The vote comes after a four-month process that included feedback from district families and work by a 50-member committee representing parents, teachers, staff members, administration, and community members.

The approved map is based on students who live in our district attending their resident school. This means that students who live in the attendance boundary of one WDMCS school but have transferred to another school in our district would return to their resident or “home” school in the district. This includes voluntary transfers and “capped out” students. This would not include special education students who attend programming only offered in certain schools.

The approved map and implementation plan are available here:

Boundary Change Up For Board Action Dec. 8

On Monday, Dec. 8, the West Des Moines Community Schools district administration will ask the Board of Education to take action on the proposal to change elementary school attendance boundaries beginning with the 2015-16 school year. The proposal will be presented for approval at the School Board’s regular meeting, which begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Learning Resource Center, 3550 Mills Civic Parkway, in West Des Moines. A proposed implementation plan also will be presented. This meeting is open to the public.

The School Board reviewed the proposal at a public workshop on November 24.

The proposed map was recommended to district administration by the district’s boundary committee at its November 17 meeting. The 50-member committee made up of parents, teachers, staff members, administrators and community members, made its recommendation after developing several map scenarios, reviewing district enrollment data and trends, and reviewing public feedback from three public forums and an online survey on two draft maps. In addition, the committee had boundary criteria, which was set by the school board.
