School Board Highlights – August 25

School Board Reviews Early Budget Forecast
At a workshop on August 25, the West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education reviewed a preliminary budget and forecasting tool recently purchased by the district. Early estimates show that the district will need to continue budget reductions. Leaders need key pieces of information to determine the final amount and will update the template after fiscal year 2014 financial information is filed with the Iowa Department of Education on September 15.

Information still needed include final enrollment numbers, taxable valuations and more. The district takes official enrollment on October 15, according to state requirements. The district receives approximately $6,366 per student. Taxable valuations are not provided until January.

District administration will review these factors as they come in, include them in the financial planning tool and provide updated reports to the School Board this fall and winter.

The district went through a budget reduction process last year, cutting $2.7 million in spending for fiscal year 2015.
