WDMCS School Board Aug. 13 Meeting Summary

The West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education held a regular meeting on Monday, August 13, 2012, and took the following action:

  • approved the consent agenda including personnel resignations, recommendations, support staff new hires, certified staff initial contracts, minutes from the July 9, July 13, July 18 and July 23 meetings;
  • a student trip request for the Valley Singers to travel to Newton, Iowa for a choir retreat August 12-13, 2012 and Crossroads Park sixth graders to travel to the Springbrook Education Center October 11-12, 2012;
  • a contract for a street lighting design on Fuller Road from South 35th Street to the West property line of Jordan Creek Elementary School for a basic fee of $3,350;
  • the Minor Modification to the City of West Des Moines for changes to the northeast corner of the Valley high School building with an application fee of $55 and a traffic analysis fee of $100;
  • substantial completion of the Jordan Creek Elementary School flooring project according to and as required by contract documents;
  • change orders to the VHS Improvements 2011 Phase 2 project for Concrete Technologies Inc. ($1,860) to install two door control bollards and furnish and install four bollards in loading dock paving, for Forrest & Associate ($975) to install cast stone and delete flashing and increase chase size, for Katelman Steel Fabrication Inc. ($878) to furnish three galvanized steel door control bollards, for Nikkel and Associate, Inc. ($3,154) to lower existing parking lot power for north parking lot installation, to lower existing electrical conduit for installation of new commons ramp,  to install lights, to relocate existing conduit for bar joist reinforcing for new bulkhead, to add an outlet, for Olympic Companies ($9,340) to add gyp to top of walls, to add gyp framing at the tops of walls, and to fur wall around bulkhead piping, for Proctor Mechanical ($413) to raise an existing floor clean out in the area where the new fieldhouse ramp is to be installed;
  • change orders to the VHS Improvements 2011 Phase 3A project for Jensen Builders ($7,533) to remove and replace approximately 590 sf of existing sidewalk per Owner direction; change orders to the Stilwell Junior High project for Hansen Company ($10,465) to level floor at reading room, modify and install new used millwork at I-tech Cad lab, relocate access to tunnel restroom adjacent to kitchen, add whiteboards, furnish and install new acrylic skylight,  add two fire extinguishers and cabinets, add blocking for windows due to CMU size change, remove linoleum that was under carpet in reading room prior to install of new carpet, remove, re grade, and replace area of paving in order to improve drainage of water at south parking lot, for NAI ($16,417) to splice feeder to new 750 KVA Transformer, lighting retrofit changes, below grade electrical rough in changes at kitchen/ server, scope of PR #002 reduced,  delete requirement to demolish lighting above lockers, delete adding cabling and termination of projector in mechanical room, demolish and clean up existing abandoned wiring and conduit in exercise room, for Olympic Wall Systems ($8773.33) to furnish and install acoustical ceiling tile in locker rooms, to add gyp board and metal studs at east wall of restroom 1134, bulkhead in Corridor C1130, coiling door head details, for Seedorf Masonry Inc. ($1085) to add two fire extinguishers, one in kitchen and one in server and for coiling door head details, for Central Iowa Mechanical ($12,358) to furnish and install ductwork and diffusers for acoustical ceilings and to replace heating coil in AHU-4; for Midwest Fire Sprinkler ($4645) to install additional piping and concealed fire sprinkler heads for acoustical ceiling, for Des Moines Marble and Mantel ($7,340) to furnish Ceramic Tile from original wainscot to ceiling;
  • change orders to the Walnut Creek Campus project for Rochon Corporation (-$10,559.00) to eliminate the temporary access road, to furnish and install p.lam filler panels near classroom doors, for temporary heat fuel provided by the Owner, to furnish and install two office signs, to furnish and install two markerboards and two site trash receptacles, for Olympic Companies ($4,427.00) to relocate Door 1103E and to furnish and install stainless steel wall panels at fume hood, for Van Maanen Electric ($8,786.00) to relocate duplex receptacle in 1103E, to add duplex receptacle and voice/data outlet in Storage 1103B & Office 1201C and to furnish and install additional fire alarm devices; substantial completion of the Walnut Creek Campus project according to and as required by contract documents for the following prime contractors: Rochon Corporation of Iowa, Inc., Olympic Companies, Inc., Allied Construction Services, Inc., Des Moines Marble & Mantel Company, Summit Fire Protection, L.A. Fulton & Sons, Inc. and Van Maanen Electric, Inc;
  • approved the Preschool Handbook is for the 2012-13 school year with changes as presented;
  • approved Amendments No. 5 and No. 6 to the Standard Form of Agreement between the district and RDG for Valley High School;
  • approved the contract with Polk County Early Childhood Iowa (PECI) Board for the 2012– 2013 school year;
  • approved the 28E agreements with our Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program partners Apple Tree (Ashworth), Apple Tree (Grand), Olivet, Sacred Heart, St. Timothy’s, and West Des Moines United Methodist;
  • approved the agreement between the City of West Des Moines and West Des Moines Community Schools for the use of Rex Mathes and operation of a Teen Center at that location;
  • approved the RevTrak Government Merchant Agreement for on-line fee payment processing and  Computer Information Concepts, Inc. On-Line Payment Interface to RevTrak;
  • approved the 28E agreement with Lutheran Church of Hope for the rental of classrooms and facility space during the temporary relocation of Hillside Elementary School with no rental fee charged, only the actual increased cost of utilities, janitorial, supplies and other similar services and supplies;
  • approved the Contemporary Services Corporation contract for event security for the 2012-13 school year for Valley High School and Dowling Catholic High School football games played at Valley Stadium;
  • approved the bills for payment in the amount of $15,008,521.42 dated August 13, 2012.
