WDMCS Sends Record Number of Entries to IHSSA State Competition, Brings Home Record for I Ratings

IHSSAUPDATE:
After qualifying a record number of entries into the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State Competition, Valley High School, Valley Southwoods Freshman High School and Walnut Creek Campus brought home a record number of I ratings from the weekend.

Each school is allowed to enter 22 events in the district competition, and for the first time in school history Valley advanced all 22 of its entries to state, where all 22 entries received a I rating.

“Regardless of their ratings, my wish – always – for all my students is to have a positive, affirming, enriching process of theatre and friendship,” said VHS language arts teacher and drama director Stacy Hansen. “Their performances on Saturday were soul-touching, but even more so, they’ve experienced a process that will impact their lives through adulthood.”

Valley Southwoods advanced 14 of 15 entries from districts to state and brought back 10 I ratings. Walnut Creek Campus advanced two of its three entries to state and received a I rating from each judge for its Short Film entry, which was a first for the school.

FROM FEBRUARY 1:
Valley High School, Valley Southwoods Freshman High School and Walnut Creek Campus have qualified a school record 38 entries into the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State Competition to be held at Ankeny High School on Feb. 3-4.

“Students have dedicated themselves to rehearsals since they auditioned in November,” said VHS language arts teacher and drama director Stacy Hansen. “Many of our students are also in choral and instrumental activities as well as athletics, work obligations, and other activities. They do an outstanding job of maintaining impressive GPAs.  I’m always awed by how our students are so well rounded and so responsible in all of their activities!”

Each school is allowed to enter 22 events in the district competition. For the first time, Valley advanced all 22 of its events to the state competition, while Valley Southwoods advanced 14 of 15 entries from districts to state. Walnut Creek Campus advanced two of its three entries to state. Seven Walnut Creek Campus students, 64 students from Valley Southwoods and 131 students from Valley will make the trip to Ankeny.

“I love working with freshman students!” Valley Southwoods speech and theatrics teacher Katie Dorrell says. “They have worked so hard to get where they are this year. I’m so proud that they have come this far. And they continue to put the hard work needed for state competition.

“I’m also grateful that the Iowa High School Speech Association gives them the chance to be their own team, which gives them a unique opportunity to shine.”
