Westridge Kindergartners Celebrate 100 Days of School

100 Days of Kindergarten

Westridge students celebrate 100 days of kindergarten.

It was a special day for kindergartners throughout the West Des Moines Community Schools today. Over the weekend, they planned and counted in preparation for their 100th day of school.

Even though it had been 100 days, it didn’t feel like it to the students at Westridge Elementary.

“It just feels like two days,” said Dani Schnicker.

Valley Students Selected as Candidates for Presidential Scholars

Valley High School seniors Scott Johnson, Liu Xiaoxue, Sam Schulte, Edward Tannenbaum and Luchang Wang have been selected as a candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars Program, which recognizes the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors.

Scholars are chosen on the basis of their accomplishments in many areas, including academics, arts, leadership and involvement in school and the community. Candidates from around the country will apply in hopes of being selected as one of 500 finalists, from which up to 141 Scholars will be chosen. (more…)

Anderson Named Gatorade Iowa Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year

Ben AndersonValley junior Ben Anderson has been named the 2011-2 Gatorade Iowa Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year after winning the Class 4A individual state championship in a time of 15:02 and setting a state meet record for all classes.

Anderson is the first Gatorade Iowa Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year from Valley. He won seven of the 11 races he competed in this year, including victories at the Tom Karpen Invitational, the Indianola Invitation and the Ankeny Invitational. He also volunteers as a peer math tutor, with the Hy-Vee Triathlon and as part of multiple community service initiatives in association with his church youth group. (more…)

Students Teach Students About Bullying Prevention

Drew, a sixth grader at Crossroads Park Elementary, stands at a microphone in the gym before about 550 of his classmates.

Being in front of an audience is nothing new to him. Drew has been dancing since he was very young and has performed in such productions as the Iowa Dance Theater’s “The Nutcracker.”

Today, however, he won’t be dancing and the topic isn’t festive. Drew and about 15 of his classmates are performing a skit about bullying.

It is a topic Drew understands.

Math and Reading For Breakfast

Eric, the father of a Westridge Elementary first grader, changed his morning routine today.

Instead of sitting at home for breakfast and then going to work, he was sitting on the floor of Ms. Robbins’ class listening to his son read.

Three WDMCS Students Honored at Martin Luther King Celebration

Grant DeWaay won the third-fourth grade category.

Three students from the West Des Moines Community Schools were honored at the Martin Luther King Celebration at the Iowa Historical Building for the essays they submitted to the state-wide MLK Essay Contest. Brittany Burklund from Stilwell and Grant DeWaay from Jordan Creek each placed first in their grade category, while Hailey Stark placed second in her grade category.

Each of the honorees received an awards certificate and got their photo taken with Governor Terry Branstad, Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds and the keynote speaker of the program, Dr. William G. Anderson.

In conjunction with the Martin Luther King Day of Service, students were asked if they had no money worries and could volunteer all the time, what would they do and why would it help the community. The program was sponsored by the Iowa Commission on the Status of African-Americans. (more…)

WDMCS Board: Teacher Training Earns Grad Credit & PD Plan Introduced

The WDMCS Board of Education held a regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 9, 2011, and took the following action:

  • approved an agreement with Drake University School of Education to provide school personnel with staff development courses for Drake University graduate credit with $70 per credit hour paid to Drake University. It was noted that this agreement continues the district’s long and successful partnership with Drake in this initiative and is beneficial to staff and supports their on-going professional development; (more…)
