WDMCS Board Meeting Summary

The following is an informal summary of the actions of the West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education at recent meetings. This is provided as a service to district staff and the public. This is not the official minutes of the board meeting, but a quick rundown of action taken. Official board minutes must be approved by the board per Policy 212.1 and then are posted on our website (www.wdmcs.org).

The WDMCS Board of Education held a regular meeting on Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, and took the following action:

  • approved the consent agenda including minutes from four special meetings held Nov. 2, Nov. 7, Nov. 9, and Nov. 15 and a workshop and a regular meeting held on Nov. 7, personnel resignations, recommendations, support staff new hires, facilities projects including substantial completion of work by Academy Roofing, Central Western Fabricators, Jensen Builders, Lansink Construction and final acceptance of work completed by Academy Roofing on the VHS Improvements Phase 1, final acceptance of work completed by Hansen Company, Inc. on the Rex Mathes Building Renovations with  PPEL, Community Education and City of West Des Moines’ funds used for this project, substantially completion and final acceptance of work by Color Inc., Triplett Companies, Allied Construction Services on Crossroads Park Elementary;
  • approved a change order to the Jensen contract for installation of a new water line serving a parking lot fire hydrant for a total cost of work at $16,664.00 for the VHS Improvements Phase 1 project;
  • approved a change order to the following contracts for the VHS Improvement Phase 2 project – Architectural Wall Systems ($0.00) to provide an alternative finish on the composite metal wall panels as per ASI 106; Forrest & Associate ($0.00) to omit suspended lintels per PR104, Katelman Steel Fabricators ($6,584.00) to omit suspended lintels per PR104, Hansen Company (-$12,000.00) to reuse existing hardware per PR100 as well as other salvaged hardware, Siemens Industry (- $240.00) to reuse two existing card readers per PR100, HSI ($1,265.00) to install reinforced poly over the louver openings in the new penthouse per owner request;
  • approved an amendment to the 28E Agreement between Polk County Early Childhood Iowa and the district. WDMCS serves as the employer of record for a Preschool Quality Coach that serves Polk County preschools. Early Childhood Iowa reimburses the district for all costs related to the position and would like to increase the salary by $2500 due to added responsibilities. The amendment increases the amount of the existing 28e agreement by $2900 to allow for a $2500 pay increase plus benefits;
  • approved a Student Teaching Agreement with Grand Canyon University;
  • approved an agreement in the amount of $16,706 with Gallup, Inc. for TeacherInsight, a research-based, structured online assessment completed by each teacher applicant that provides depth, ease, and speed in screening.;
  • approved an agreement addendum to West Des Moines Community School District Policy Statement and Agreement with Iowa Department of Education, Bureau of Nutrition, Health, and Transportation Services to provide afterschool care snacks to students. The Afterschool Care Snack Program provides additional funds for nutritional snacks for students in afterschool regularly-scheduled education or enrichment activities in an organized, structured, and supervised environment. Indian Hills, Stilwell, Clive, and Fairmeadows serve afterschool snacks;
  • held a hearing on and approved the sale of the residential dwelling at 1200 8th Street, West Des Moines, Iowa to Ashley Hagar for $136,500;
  • approved the KIDS WEST fees for the 2012 Summer Day Camp and for the 2012-13 School year program with no fee increase;
  • approved the bills for payment in the amount of $16,884,983.96.
