Students Approved to Travel to China & Other Action at WDMCS Board Meeting

The following is an informal summary of the actions of the West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education at a recent meeting. This is provided as a service to district staff and the public. They are not the official minutes of the board meeting, but a quick rundown of action taken. The Board of Education of the West Des Moines Community School District held a regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, and took the following action:

  • approved the consent agenda including minutes from the Oct. 4, 10, and 12 meetings, personnel resignations, recommendations, support staff new hires, certified staff initial contracts, and two student trip requests: the Spotlight (Newspaper), Tiger Tales (Yearbook), and committed journalism students to travel to Iowa City, Iowa, on October 27, 2011 for the Iowa High School Press Association Fall Conference with costs covered by the Language Arts Department and Yearbook account; Indian Hills and Stilwell Junior High string students to travel to the People’s Republic of China – Beijing and Shijiazhuang March 14 – 22, 2012, with travel costs covered through  the Chinese Grand and student funding;
  • denied an open enrollment request into the district for the 2011-12 school year due to the request being late/not meeting good cause;
  • approved a design proposal from Shive-Hattery, Inc. for roof replacements at Westridge Elementary School. The total square footage of the proposed roof replacements is 90,000 sq. ft. In addition, Shive-Hattery will design the replacement of all EIFS exterior wall surfaces. This will include window replacement and mechanical louvers modifications/replacement, and review of all Penthouse door openings, and recommendations for corrective action, if needed. The size is approximately 4,000 sq. ft. with an estimated construction cost of approximately $150,000. Shive-Hattery’s proposed design fee for the Westridge Elementary School Roof Replacements project is a fixed fee of $97,750 plus reimbursable expenses limited at $3,000. Actual roof design would start immediately and work would start during the summer of 2012. If approved, a roofing consultant will coordinate any and all design work with building envelope consultant from K-Dent, Inc. Services Tax funds will be allocated and an approximate budget of $1,410,000 will be set for this project;
  • approved a building envelope consulting, inspection and testing proposal from K-Dent, Inc. at a fixed fee of $24,000 for the needed roof replacements and EIFS exterior wall surface replacements at Westridge Elementary School;
  • approved the following change orders for the Valley High School Phase 1 project: AJ Allen ($3,911) to tie in the new chilled water on overtime; Central Western Fabricators (-$410) for a back charge relating to damaged existing finishes; Siemens ($643) for existing finishes damage; Lansink (-$89) for a back charge relating to damaged existing finishes;
  • approved a change order ($6,968) to the Corell Contractor contract to add flyash to the soil for soil stabilization for the Valley High School Tennis project. WDMCS CFO Kurt Subra reported that asphalt, fence work, and temporary lines painted for the nine courts at Valley Southwoods are scheduled to be completed in November, allowing the courts to be used this spring. A final coat of paint and lines will be applied this spring. He also noted that the first phase of the Valley High School construction project is wrapping up. The storm water detention on the southeast corner of the site will be seeded this week. Site preparation has begun on the second phase the project, which includes the three-story addition on the southwest side;
  • approved geotechnical services from Team Services, including soil borings and foundation design recommendations, as part of the Jordan Creek Elementary Phase 1 project in the amount of $1,610.00. Funding for this project will come from sales tax dollars currently assigned to the project;
  • approved a contract and amendment with Teaching Strategies GOLD, an online reporting and assessment tool being purchased for 369 students at a cost of $10.45 per student to fulfill the criteria of using a research-based curriculum/assessment tool for Statewide Voluntary Preschool. The cost will be paid for by special education for the Jordan Creek and 3’s programs and by the Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program;
  • approved an agreement between the West Des Moines Community School District and the West Des Moines Soccer Club, which releases the WDM Soccer Club from all liability associated with soccer goals they are donating to Clive Elementary School. As part of the Clive Elementary playground project, West Des Moines Soccer Club has agreed to donate two soccer goals to the project. The donation will increase access to practice space for community soccer programs including, but not limited to, the West Des Moines Soccer Club;
  • approved the purchase of two fully-seated and one non-fully seated large body special needs buses from low bidder School Bus Sales to replace the district’s 2001/2002 buses at a total cost of $319,715. Funding comes from general fund special education funds;
  • approved the bills for payment dated October 24, 2011 in the amount of $6,910,319.92.
